The University of Liverpool was established in 1881 as University College Liverpool and received its Royal Charter in 1903. It describes itself as the original redbrick university, a term inspired by its Victoria Building. It is a public research university and a member of both the Russell Group and the N8 Research Partnership of northern research-intensive universities.
The main campus is located close to Liverpool city centre and brings together historic and modern buildings for teaching, research and student life. The university also has a campus in London focused on postgraduate study and executive education, and it co-founded Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China. With around 31,000 students, Liverpool is one of the larger universities in the UK. Its strengths span medicine, veterinary science, life and health sciences, engineering, physical sciences, management, law, humanities and social sciences, and ten Nobel Prize laureates have been associated with the institution over its history.
The University of Liverpool has around 8,000 international students from 135 countries, part of a wider alumni community in more than 180 countries. Its International Advice and Guidance team provides advice on Student visas, working in the UK, dependant visas and related immigration matters.
English language requirements vary by course, with many undergraduate programmes typically requiring IELTS 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5. The English Language Centre delivers pre-sessional English courses of various lengths, from six weeks to longer programmes for students with lower starting levels, taught on campus or online depending on the level.
For students who do not yet meet direct entry requirements, the University of Liverpool International College, operated by Kaplan, provides on-campus degree preparation programmes in Liverpool with guaranteed progression to a University of Liverpool degree on successful completion at the required level. Kaplan also offers a fast-track International Year One route in law at its London college, and online degree preparation options. Accommodation is guaranteed for all first-year and foundation year undergraduate students who apply by the published deadline.
UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. The guardian acts on behalf of the parents while the student is a minor, serving as the university's point of contact in an emergency, supporting the student's welfare and providing a trusted adult close by. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with University of Liverpool is finalised. No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. University of Liverpool may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
