Abingdon School Overview

Abingdon School is an independent day and boarding school in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, just south of Oxford, educating around 1,200 students aged 11 to 18 on a 35-acre site in the town centre. The school traces its history back more than 750 years, was re-endowed by John Roysse in 1563 and has occupied its present site since 1870. It is part of the Abingdon Schools Group, together with Abingdon Prep and The Manor Prep.

Historically a boys' school, Abingdon admitted girls into the First Year and Sixth Form from September 2026; girls join the Third Year from 2028, and the school becomes fully co-educational in 2030. Students take GCSEs and then A Levels, choosing from around 25 subjects alongside the Extended Project Qualification, with more than 150 co-curricular options in the Other Half programme.

Boarding at Abingdon School

Boarding begins in the Third Year (Year 9, age 13), and almost 150 boarders live in three boarding houses, within a school community drawing students from around 40 countries. Families can choose full or weekly boarding, but students on a school-sponsored Child Student visa remain full boarders. There are no exeat weekends, so full boarders can stay throughout each term.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

The boarding houses, Austin House, Crescent House and School House, also include day students. Students in the Third to Fifth Years generally share rooms of two or three, while Sixth Formers have single rooms. Each house is led by a resident Head of House and family, with an Assistant Head of House, a House Manager and a team of tutors.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings include supervised prep after dinner, followed by house activities and lights out by year group. Saturday mornings bring staff-led options such as robotics, cooking and community service, with sport in the afternoon, while Sundays are more relaxed. Trips include London, Oxford, Stonehenge, Bristol, Thorpe Park and West Midlands Safari Park.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Academic Support department provides study skills groups, short-term one-to-one lessons and exam access arrangements, and specialist EAL teachers work with subject staff. The Health Centre has nursing staff and can supervise students overnight, boarders register with the school doctor, and counselling and a chaplaincy are available.

Every international boarder at Abingdon School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Abingdon School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Abingdon School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Abingdon School admits international boarders from the Third Year (Year 9, age 13), takes a small number of new students into the Fourth Year (Year 10), and offers Sixth Form entry at 16. There is no boarding in the First and Second Years, so international students can join at 11 only as day pupils with an existing right to study in the UK. Students start in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Abingdon does not publish minimum scores. Specialist EAL teachers give tailored support, charged as an extra, and Sixth Formers who need an English qualification for university entry are offered IELTS preparation.

Child Student Visa

Students from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Abingdon School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, sponsoring students from the Third Year upwards, and an immigration lawyer manages the sponsorship process. Sponsored students must remain full boarders throughout their time at the school. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Abingdon requires every pupil whose parents live outside the UK to have an educational guardian within 90 minutes' travel of the school. The guardian must be over 25, not in full-time education, and a UK resident who is a British citizen or holds settled status, and should be an AEGIS or BSA accredited guardian or a family member or friend meeting the same criteria. Guardians provide accommodation in every holiday and half term and act as a round-the-clock contact.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Abingdon School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, airport transfers and stays with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Abingdon School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Abingdon School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Abingdon School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Abingdon School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
