Learn More →Ackworth School is an independent, co-educational Quaker day and boarding school in the village of Ackworth, near Pontefract in West Yorkshire, educating pupils aged 2 to 19 on a 200-acre site. It was founded in 1779 by John Fothergill on behalf of the Religious Society of Friends and has been a mixed boarding school from the start. The school runs a nursery, Coram House junior school, a Senior School and a Sixth Form.
Pupils take GCSEs, and most Sixth Formers study three A Levels, with a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport also available. Quaker values of peace, equality, sustainability, simplicity and truth shape daily life, which includes silent reflection and a weekly Meeting for Worship.
Boarding is available from Year 7 (age 11) to the end of the Sixth Form, and between a quarter and a third of Senior School pupils board. Around half of the boarders come from overseas, from more than 20 countries. Some boarders go home only for the main holidays and others most weekends, and an In-Term Immersion Programme offers shorter full boarding stays.
Boys and girls live in one boarding house within the main school building, with separate sleeping areas and keypad entry. Bedrooms sleep two to four, and Sixth Form boarders also have shared studies. The house is run by a Head of Boarding and a team of House Parents, with resident teaching staff and a member of staff on duty every day.
Boarders can use the library late into the evening and at weekends. The weekend programme includes theatre visits, professional sporting events and workshops with visiting instructors in activities such as street dance, African drumming and pottery. Excursions take in York and the Jorvik Viking Centre, Stratford-upon-Avon, Fountains Abbey and Sherwood Forest.
Learning support is led by the SENCo, with a dyslexia specialist, learning support mentors and exam access arrangements; the school also has an Autism Resource and offers speech and language assessment within its Bridge provision. A Wellbeing Hub includes a school nurse, visiting GP and counsellor, and Sixth Formers have their own centre and an Oxbridge programme.

Ackworth School usually admits new pupils into Year 7, Year 9 and the Lower Sixth, and considers applications for other year groups when places are available. International boarders can join from age 11, and most start in September, while pupils on the In-Term Immersion Programme can arrive at any point in the school year. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils in Years 7 to 11 who need support receive at least five EAL lessons a fortnight, preparing for Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language, while Sixth Formers usually have three lessons a week of Academic IELTS preparation, charged as an extra.
Students from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Ackworth School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor international boarders for this visa, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Ackworth School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
