Aldenham School Overview

Aldenham School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Elstree, Hertfordshire, educating pupils aged 3 to 18 through Aldenham Prep and the Senior School. The school stands in around 120 acres about 13 miles from central London. It was founded in 1597 by a local brewer, Richard Platt, and has a Church of England foundation.

The Senior School takes pupils from age 11, following a broad curriculum to GCSE before A Levels in the Sixth Form, alongside the Extended Project Qualification. International students with weaker English may first complete an induction year before starting a two-year GCSE or A Level course.

Boarding at Aldenham School

Around 130 pupils board, most of them as flexi boarders staying two or three nights a week, alongside a smaller group of full boarders. Full boarding is available from age 13, and international students, capped at around 8% of the Senior School, come from countries including China, Germany, Spain, Nigeria, Ghana, Mexico and Brazil.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarding takes place in five modernised houses. Martineau's is a co-educational house for Years 7 and 8, and from Year 9 boarders move to a boys' or girls' house, with Kennedy's, McGill's, Beevor's and Paull's making up the rest of the boarding provision. Boarders usually share bedrooms, and each house has a kitchen. Each house has a resident Housemaster or Housemistress, resident tutors, a matron and domestic staff.

Boarding Life

After dinner, boarders complete supervised prep in their house from 7pm, followed by free time and supervised activities on site. There is no Saturday school, so Saturday mornings are given to sport, including a park run and fixtures, while Sundays begin with brunch and continue with a trip to places such as London, Oxford or Cambridge. The school has no exeat weekends, and on free weekends full boarders join longer residential trips, for example to Edinburgh.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Qualified SEN teachers give extra individual tuition when needed, and the school supports pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism who can manage in mainstream classes. A medical centre with a School Doctor and nursing team, a Chaplain and a School Counsellor support boarders' wellbeing.

Every international boarder at Aldenham School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Aldenham School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Aldenham School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Aldenham School welcomes international full boarders from age 13 through to the Sixth Form. Many long-term international students join for A Levels as a route to UK universities, others take the two-year GCSE course, and students with weaker English can start with an induction year. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Aldenham School does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels, but expects a good command of English. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. EAL support is provided where needed, and the induction year gives students time to build fluency before their examination courses.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Aldenham School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and gives families the information they need for the visa application, which is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Aldenham School expects every overseas boarder to have a guardian appointed by the family or agent before arrival, who takes on academic and welfare responsibilities and provides overnight accommodation when needed. Half-term arrangements must be in place before the student arrives, and house staff check the guardian's suitability.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Aldenham School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Aldenham School accepts international students as full boarders for one term or two terms as well as for a full year, where boarding places allow. Some short-term boarders later stay on to complete a full course. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Aldenham School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Aldenham School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Aldenham School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Aldenham School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
