All Hallows Prep School Overview

All Hallows Prep School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school for children aged 3 to 13 at Cranmore Hall, near Shepton Mallet in Somerset. Founded in 1938, it moved after the Second World War to Cranmore Hall, a Grade II* listed house in 40 acres of countryside, and has been co-educational since 1971. Since 2022 it has been part of the Monkton Family of Schools with Monkton Combe School near Bath, sharing resources and expertise.

All Hallows is a Christian school that welcomes families of all faiths and none. Pupils from the Nursery to Year 8 are prepared for senior school entry at 13 through Common Entrance or scholarships, and the community brings together local day families, military families and international students.

Boarding at All Hallows Prep School

Around 30 pupils board, in roughly equal numbers of boys and girls. Boarding is open from Year 3 to Year 8 as full, weekly or flexi boarding, occasional nights, or Day Plus on set nights. Overseas pupils have come mainly from Spain, and more recently from France, Russia, Italy, Japan and Nigeria. Most boarders leave school on regular exeat weekends.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in the main school house, in shared dormitories of four to 12 beds that they can personalise, with common rooms for relaxing. Many staff live on site, and medical cover is available at all times from a qualified nurse or resident staff trained in paediatric first aid.

Boarding Life

After lessons, boarders have a snack, free time, prep and activities before supper. In the evenings and at weekends they can use the indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, artificial pitch, Creative Centre and woodland, and a Saturday morning enrichment programme for Years 6 to 8 offers options such as golf, archery and woodwork.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning Support, led by the SENCo, combines adapted teaching in class, short small-group or individual work in spelling, reading and maths, and one-to-one support planned through an individual education plan. A visiting speech and language therapist and occupational therapist work with pupils who need them, and pastoral care uses the Girls on Board and No One Left Behind approaches to friendships.

International boarders at All Hallows Prep School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

All Hallows Prep School admits children at any age from the Nursery to Year 8, and pupils can start at any point in the academic year when places allow, although boarding beds in some year groups fill quickly. Boarding is available from Year 3 through to Year 8, and most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. All Hallows does not publish minimum English levels, but it has long taught pupils whose first language is not English. New pupils are assessed in their first days, and a qualified specialist teacher gives English as a Foreign Language lessons one to one or in small groups. Pupils may work towards Cambridge English qualifications such as KET, PET and First Certificate.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. All Hallows Prep School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and can sponsor international boarders for this visa. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. At All Hallows, boarders may spend exeat weekends with a guardian, so international families need a reliable guardian who can collect a young child and provide a home for those weekends as well as for half terms and holidays.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for All Hallows Prep School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.
