Badminton School Overview

Badminton School is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 3 to 18 in Westbury-on-Trym, north-west Bristol. The Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form share one campus with a sports centre, swimming pool and Creative Arts Centre. Founded in 1858 to give girls the same educational opportunities as their brothers, the school takes its name from Badminton House in Clifton and moved to its present site in 1924.

Girls follow a broad curriculum through the Lower and Middle School to GCSE, then study A Levels in the Sixth Form, choosing from around 20 subjects taught in groups of roughly five to fifteen students.

Boarding at Badminton School

Around 170 of the school's 500 or so pupils board, and girls come from almost 20 countries. Boarding runs from Year 4 to the Upper Sixth. Families can choose full, weekly or occasional boarding. The school also runs a Short Stay Programme for international girls, from a brief immersion to a full year.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in three houses organised by age. Bartlett House is home to girls in Years 4 to 8, who share dormitories of three or four. Girls in Years 9 to 11 board in Sanderson House, a modern house with rooms for three or four and social spaces on each floor. Sixth Form boarders move to the Sixth Form Centre, with single or twin study bedrooms and a kitchen. Every house has a resident Housemistress, deputies and Graduate Boarding Assistants.

Boarding Life

In the evenings boarders can use the sports centre, swimming pool and music rooms. Weekends are busy, with boarders helping to choose activities such as outings, pamper evenings and silent discos. Younger girls are always escorted off site, Year 8 girls may walk in groups to the local high street, and Sixth Formers can travel in pairs to agreed parts of Bristol with permission.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A dedicated learning support department works with girls who have special educational needs, and the Good Schools Guide notes one-to-one mentoring for dyslexic pupils, CReSTeD registration and support for dyspraxia. Form tutors see every girl individually, a vertical house system links year groups, and the on-site Health Centre gives access to professional counsellors.

Every international boarder at Badminton School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Badminton School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Badminton School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Badminton School accepts overseas boarders from age 8, in Year 4 of the Prep School, and girls can continue through the Senior School to the Sixth Form. The main entry points for older girls are Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 and the Lower Sixth, and most girls join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Girls who speak English as a second language receive additional English teaching in the Senior School, and short-stay pupils follow a tailored programme that includes English language improvement.

Child Student Visa

Girls coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Badminton School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents.

UK Guardian Requirement

Badminton School makes a UK guardian a condition of entry for every boarder whose parents live outside the UK, whatever her age. The guardian must be over 25 and either accredited by AEGIS or the Boarding Schools' Association, or a direct family member who is British or has settled status and lives in the UK. Guardians act for parents during exeats and holidays and are the first point of contact if problems arise.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, which meets the school's accreditation requirement, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Badminton School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel arrangements and stays with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

The Short Stay Programme places international girls in a boarding house and in lessons alongside full-time pupils, for anything from a short immersion to a whole year. Past participants have joined for a month in Year 8, a term in Year 9 and a year in the Sixth Form, supported by a Short Stay Coordinator. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Badminton School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Badminton School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Badminton School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Badminton School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
