First opened in 1883 as the North Eastern County School, it took its current name in 1924 and has been fully co-educational since 1993.

Pupils take GCSEs in the Senior School, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels, BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification.

More than 90 pupils board, and international students from more than 15 countries make up about a quarter of the full boarding community. Boarding starts at age 7, with full boarding through to the Sixth Form alongside weekly and occasional flexi stays, and the school also runs short stays and an immersion programme.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys and girls in Years 3 to 8 board together in Old Courts, a refurbished junior house that spans the move from the Prep School to the Senior School. Older girls board in Longfield, home to around 55 boarders, and senior boys in York and Northumberland, on the upper floors of the main school building, with shared common rooms and a kitchen. Senior rooms are mostly singles and twins, international boarders share with British boarders, and each house has a Housemaster or Housemistress, matrons and tutors.

Boarding Life

After activities and tea, boarders have supervised prep from 6.15pm, followed by free time, with lights out staggered by year group. Sunday trips range from bowling, cinema and go-karting to paintballing and shopping, and the houses stay open on the six exeat weekends each year for boarders who cannot travel home.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Academic Support department works with pupils whose learning differences, the school says, can include dyslexia, autism, ADHD, physical disabilities and medical conditions, offering study skills, subject tutorials, one-to-one lessons and exam access arrangements. A Wellbeing Centre includes a medical centre with two full-time nurses and a counselling service, and a GP visits each morning.
