Battle Abbey School Overview

Battle Abbey School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in East Sussex for more than 400 pupils aged three months to 18. The Senior School and Sixth Form occupy the grounds of Battle Abbey, the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings, while the Nursery and Prep School are based on a second campus in Bexhill.

Founded in Bexhill in 1912 as a school for girls, it moved to the Abbey in 1922 and became co-educational after a merger in 1989. Pupils take GCSEs after a broad Key Stage 3 curriculum, and the Sixth Form offers more than 20 A Level subjects alongside BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Battle Abbey School

Boarding is available from age 11 to 18 as full, weekly or flexi boarding, with weekly boarders staying from Sunday or Monday night to Thursday night. The boarding house takes up to 50 students, and the community has included pupils from Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Germany, Spain, France and Slovakia. Shorter stays, such as half a term, are also possible.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live at Leeford Lodge, a former country hotel near Whatlington that the school acquired in 2025, around three minutes' drive from the Abbey. Every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, and the house has a range of social and study areas. Boarding staff live on site, and boarders travel to school on regular school transport.

Boarding Life

Evenings balance study with house activities, and weekends bring organised excursions. Depending on age and permission, boarders can visit Battle, Hastings and further afield independently or in supervised groups. Sixth Form students also use Martlet House, the sixth form centre in Battle, which has a common room, a cafe, quiet study rooms and a gym.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every pupil has a tutor, seen daily, supported by Heads of Year, the boarding team, a school counsellor and peer mentors. The EAL Department builds international students' reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and is supported by native-speaker teachers of Russian, Cantonese and Mandarin. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

Every international boarder at Battle Abbey School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Battle Abbey School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Battle Abbey School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Battle Abbey School welcomes international boarders from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form, for a full GCSE or A Level course or for a shorter immersion stay. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school expects international pupils to have enough English to follow their full curriculum, with guideline levels by year of entry:

  • Years 7 and 8 (ages 11 and 12): elementary
  • Year 9 (age 13): low intermediate
  • Year 10 (age 14): upper intermediate
  • Year 12 (age 16): upper intermediate to advanced, depending on subject choices

Applicants slightly below these levels may be considered if their subjects suit them. EAL lessons are set by level and subject, and students can prepare for Cambridge English exams from KET to CAE, with IELTS in the Sixth Form.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Battle Abbey School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Battle Abbey School requires every student whose parents live overseas to have a suitable guardian living in the UK. Where families cannot appoint a relative or friend in the UK, the school recommends a professional guardianship organisation.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Battle Abbey School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Alongside full academic placements, Battle Abbey School accepts international students for short-term immersion stays, for example for half a term, boarding at Leeford Lodge. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Battle Abbey School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Battle Abbey School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Battle Abbey School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Battle Abbey School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
