Learn More →Bedales School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school on a 120-acre campus in the South Downs National Park, near Petersfield in Hampshire. Founded in 1893, it educates pupils from 3 to 18 across three schools: Bedales Pre-prep for ages 3 to 8, Bedales Prep for ages 8 to 13 and Bedales Senior for ages 13 to 18.
In the Senior School, pupils take GCSEs in core subjects alongside Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs), the school's own externally moderated courses, in place of many non-core GCSEs. Sixth Form students usually take three A Levels and can add the Extended Project Qualification.
Boarding begins at Bedales Prep, where families choose full, half or flexi boarding, and continues through the Senior School, where around 280 pupils board and more than three-quarters of the Sixth Form are boarders. Many UK boarders go home after Saturday lessons and return on Sunday evening, while international students, around a tenth of the school, stay in at weekends.
Prep boarders live in Dunhurst, a refurbished co-educational house in the main Prep building with separate dormitory wings and small dorms of up to four beds, cared for by teaching houseparents and resident matrons. In the Senior School, boys and girls from Year 9 to the Lower Sixth board in separate houses, and the Upper Sixth share a co-educational house with separate areas for boys and girls. Dormitories mix year groups.
Prep evenings include Homely Time, with cooking, games, crafts, reading, animal care and time outdoors. Senior evenings bring open-mic nights, debates and theatre, music and art in the studios and informal cooking in house kitchens. Weekends balance rest with activity, from London gallery trips and woodland games to visits to Petersfield.
Every student has a teacher or tutor who meets them one-to-one, and all pupils have weekly wellbeing lessons. Houseparents, counsellors and pastoral staff work as one team, matrons are on duty around the clock, and the Senior School has a Health Centre. Learning support covers needs including dyslexia, ADHD and mild autism, with specialist literacy and maths help delivered mainly in class.

Bedales School accepts international students from age 11, when boarding begins at Bedales Prep, and the main boarding entry points are Year 7 at 11, Year 9 at 13 and Year 12 at 16. Most students join in September; other year groups are considered when places allow, except Years 11 and 13. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at the school, international students receive tailored EAL support so that they can follow their subjects and take a full part in school life. Sixth Form places depend on GCSE grades in the chosen A Level subjects.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Bedales School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
