Learn More →Belhaven Hill School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding preparatory school in Dunbar, East Lothian, on the coast around 30 miles east of Edinburgh. Founded in 1923 and run as a charitable trust, it educates children aged 4 to 13 on a 20-acre site a few minutes from Belhaven Bay, with Dunbar station on the main Edinburgh to London line close by.
Although it is in Scotland, Belhaven follows the National Curriculum for England and prepares pupils for Common Entrance and senior school scholarships, with leavers moving on to boarding schools in England and Scotland. French starts in the early years, Latin is taught in the Prep School and outdoor education is part of every class's week.
Boarding runs from age 7 (Year 3) to 13, and the school offers only day places and full boarding, with no weekly or flexi option. Under its fortnightly pattern, boarders stay in school for eleven nights and then have a weekend out from Friday lunchtime to Monday morning. Most Prep School pupils board, and international pupils form a small share of the school, with a limit on numbers from any one country.
Boys board in the original main building and girls in a refurbished girls' house, sleeping in shared dormitories. Each house is run by resident houseparents who live in with their families, supported by matrons and teaching staff. Most staff live on site, and a nurse and a wellbeing lead complete the pastoral team.
Saturdays combine lessons, matches against other prep schools and a film night, while Sundays bring letter writing, a Sunday service and activities ranging from cooking and archery to beach riding, surfing and skiing. For weekends out and half terms, school buses serve Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee, Stonehaven, Dumfries and Berwick-upon-Tweed, and an accompanied train runs to London King's Cross.
Specialist teachers in the learning support Hub provide in-class help, small-group sessions and one-to-one lessons, with support for needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism. Every pupil belongs to one of four patrols, with form teachers for younger children and personal tutors for older pupils.
Every international boarder at Belhaven Hill School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Belhaven Hill School accepts international boarders from Year 3 to Year 8, aged 7 to 13. Some stay for a single term, while others remain for a year or longer. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Belhaven does not publish minimum English levels for entry. The school has an EFL teacher, and pupils who need extra English can take it in place of French. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Belhaven Hill School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and its licence allows it to admit a small number of pupils who do not hold a British passport. The school can introduce families to immigration lawyers, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Belhaven Hill School requires every overseas pupil to have a UK-based guardian, ideally living within an hour's drive of the school, to look after the child during weekends out, half terms and holidays. The school is a member of AEGIS and points families towards accredited guardianship organisations.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Belhaven Hill School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
