Berkhamsted School Overview

Berkhamsted School is an independent day and boarding school in Berkhamsted, a market town in the Chiltern Hills of Hertfordshire, around 30 minutes from London Euston by direct train. Founded in 1541 by John Incent, Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, its original Tudor school hall, completed in 1544, still stands. Berkhamsted is part of the Berkhamsted Schools Group, which educates children from five months to 18 and includes two girls' prep schools, Heatherton and Charlotte House.

The school follows a diamond structure: boys and girls are taught together in the Pre-Prep and Prep, separately in Berkhamsted Boys and Berkhamsted Girls from 11 to 16, and together again in the co-educational Sixth Form. Pupils take GCSEs and then A Levels.

Boarding at Berkhamsted School

The boarding community numbers around 100 students from the UK and overseas. Full termly boarding is open to boys from Year 9 and to girls from Year 12, weekly boarding runs from Sunday to Thursday night, and flexi boarding is available from Year 7, mainly for local pupils.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in two neighbouring houses on Chesham Road, St John's for girls and Incents for boys, a short walk from the campuses and town centre. St John's has single and twin rooms and Incents single, twin and triple rooms, many of them en-suite. Each house has a common room and kitchen, and a Head of House and two residential tutors run each house with a matron.

Boarding Life

After lessons boarders join clubs or return to the house before supper, evening prep runs from 7pm to 8.30pm, and everyone is back in the house by 10pm. Boys and girls eat together, and the houses hold cooking, quiz and film evenings. Weekends bring trips to London, Oxford and Birmingham, local outings and sports fixtures, and boarders have free membership of the on-site sports centre, with its gym and 25-metre pool.

Academic and Pastoral Support

During the school day each boarder also belongs to a day house with a Head of House and academic tutor. A Wellbeing Team of nurses, counsellors and chaplaincy staff supports pupils. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

International boarders at Berkhamsted School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Berkhamsted School welcomes international boarders at two main stages. Boys can join as full boarders from Year 9, one of the two main entry points to Berkhamsted Boys, and both boys and girls can join the co-educational Sixth Form in Year 12. Entry to other year groups depends on the availability of places and is uncommon, and Berkhamsted Boys does not admit pupils into Year 11. Most international students join in September, and the school offers a number of full-time boarding places to overseas students. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Berkhamsted does not publish minimum English levels or details of EAL provision for international applicants. All international candidates take part in the school's entrance assessment, and Sixth Form entrants are expected to study three A Level subjects, so a secure level of academic English is needed from the start. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Berkhamsted School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and has a dedicated international admissions team, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Berkhamsted School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Berkhamsted School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Berkhamsted School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
