Learn More →Bethany School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18 in Goudhurst, near Cranbrook in Kent, set on a 60-acre rural campus. Founded in 1866 by the Reverend Joseph James Kendon, the school has admitted girls since 1991 and keeps a Christian ethos, with pupils attending chapel twice a week. With around 300 pupils, it is a small school with small classes.
Pupils follow a broad curriculum to GCSE, and the Sixth Form offers 23 A Level and BTEC courses. Facilities include a 25-metre indoor pool and the Pengelly Performance Centre and Music School, completed in 2024. Marden station, around two miles away, has direct trains to London Charing Cross in about an hour.
More than 100 pupils board, and the school community includes more than 20 nationalities. Families can choose full boarding, weekly boarding from Monday to Friday or flexi boarding for one to four nights a week, and the school also offers term boarding and short immersion stays. Many staff live on campus with their families.
The Mount, on the edge of the campus, is home to Year 7 boys, while Sixth Form boarders live in The Orchard, where every boarder has an en-suite single room. Younger pupils usually share a bedroom with two others, and older pupils have their own en-suite room. Each house is run by a resident Housemaster or Housemistress with assistant house staff, a matron and house tutors.
Evenings start with supervised prep, after which boarders can visit friends in other houses, join activities or use the indoor pool. Saturdays bring trips to theme parks, towns and cultural sites, sports fixtures and shopping, while Sundays are quieter, with house activities and small-group outings. There is one home weekend each half term, when full and overseas boarders can stay with their guardian or remain at school.
Bethany is accredited by CReSTeD for its dyslexia provision. The Dyslexia and Learning Support department, led by the SENDCo, teaches small-group lessons and one-to-one Sixth Form sessions for pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism. The Medical Centre provides 24-hour cover with a resident nursing sister.

Applicants whose first language is not English take the school's EAL assessment, and the school must be confident that each pupil can manage the UK curriculum on arrival. EAL support is built into the timetable:
No minimum CEFR or IELTS level is published, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Bethany School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and works with an external partner to issue the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Bethany School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Bethany School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Bethany School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
