Bishop's Stortford College Overview

Bishop's Stortford College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, for pupils aged 3 to 18. Founded in 1868 by East Anglian Nonconformists, it became fully co-educational in 1995. All stages share one campus of around 130 acres near the town centre and station, with Cambridge about 25 minutes and London about 35 minutes away by train.

Boarding begins in Year 9, so boarders follow GCSE courses in the Senior School and continue to A Levels in the Sixth Form, where the Stortfordian Diploma complements academic study.

Boarding at Bishop's Stortford College

Around 180 students board, roughly a quarter of the Senior School, and more than half of the boarders come from overseas. Boarding is available from Year 9 as full boarding (seven nights a week), weekly boarding (five or six nights) or flexi boarding (one to four nights), and international students can also take short-term places of one term to one year.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are four single-sex boarding houses: Robert Pearce House and Rowe House for boys, and Trotman House, purpose-built in 2017, and Young House for girls. Each house combines boarders with day pupils. Bedrooms range from singles to twin and four-bed rooms, around 80 per cent are en-suite, and houses have common rooms, kitchens and study rooms. A housemaster or housemistress leads each house with a team of tutors.

Boarding Life

Weekdays end with supper and a set homework period until 8.30pm, after which boarders have the sports hall, gym, tennis courts and music rooms to themselves. Saturday mornings include compulsory activities and fixtures, and with no exeat weekends around 90 per cent of boarders stay on site at weekends. A British culture programme includes trips to London and Cambridge, theatre, museums, the coast and theme parks, plus skiing, sailing and Premier League football. New boarders attend an induction week before the September term.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Department offers in-class help, small-group and one-to-one sessions and exam access arrangements, and its policy covers needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and ADHD. Pastoral care runs through the house system, with a school counsellor available, and the Futures programme gives sixth formers personalised university and careers guidance.

Every international boarder at Bishop's Stortford College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

The College publishes guideline English levels for its main entry points:

  • Year 9 (age 13): lower B2, or IELTS 5.5
  • Year 12 (age 16): upper B2, or IELTS 6.5

Sixth Form applicants with a lower level may be advised to take extra ESOL in place of one subject. A trained ESOL team teaches students individually or in small groups, preparing them for qualifications such as Cambridge First, IGCSE English as a Second Language and IELTS.

The admissions team helps with supporting documents, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement
