Blundell's School Overview

Blundell's School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school on the edge of Tiverton, a market town in mid Devon. Founded in 1604 under the will of Peter Blundell, an Elizabethan cloth merchant, it moved to its present site in 1882. Blundell's Prep School, for ages 3 to 11, shares the campus, and boarding begins at 11 in the Senior School.

The Senior School has around 630 pupils, about 200 of them in the Sixth Form. Pupils usually take nine or ten GCSEs, then A Levels, with BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification also offered. Tiverton Parkway station is about two hours from London Paddington by train.

Boarding at Blundell's School

About two thirds of Senior School pupils board, more than 200 in total, including around 90 from overseas. Families choose full boarding, seven days a week, weekly boarding from Monday to Friday, or flexi boarding through termly packages of nights. The school limits numbers from any one country, and the houses stay open at weekends.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Every pupil belongs to one of seven houses arranged by age. Years 7 and 8 live in co-educational School House. From Year 9 to Year 12, boys board in Francis House, Old House or Petergate and girls in Gorton House or North Close. Year 13 pupils move to Westlake, a co-educational house with accommodation similar to a first year at university. Each house has a Houseparent, tutors and a matron, plus a kitchen for snacks. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings include supper and supervised prep in house. Weekend activities have included barbecues, quiz evenings, outdoor games, surfing trips and visits to towns and cities across the South West, and the co-curricular programme covers the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, the Combined Cadet Force, canoeing and sailing.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Six specialist teachers in the Learning Support department give one-to-one and small-group help in literacy, mathematics and study skills, including structured dyslexia programmes and dyscalculia guidance, built into the timetable. Tutors oversee each pupil's progress under the Houseparent, and the Medical Centre has a nursing team led by the School Doctor.

Every international boarder at Blundell's School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Blundell's School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Blundell's School accepts international boarders from Year 7, when pupils enter School House, and into the Sixth Form, and entry in other year groups is considered individually. Most international students join in September, and around 12 percent of the school roll comes from overseas. International pupils live in the same houses as British boarders, and an International Hub supports a pupil International Committee that considers the needs of students from different cultures. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Specialist EAL teachers run English courses in small groups, aimed at building confidence and helping students follow every subject, with one-to-one lessons added where needed. Sixth form students can take a one-year IELTS course, taught in very small groups, which ends in the examination and supports university applications; the EAL department organises the testing.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Blundell's School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can issue the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies needed for an application, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Blundell's School requires every overseas pupil to have a guardian based in the UK. The school does not publish further conditions, and British Guardianship confirms its specific requirements as part of placement. For travel, the school runs coaches between Heathrow Airport and Tiverton on the first and last day of each half of term, which helps guardians and families plan arrivals and departures.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Blundell's School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents one dependable point of contact in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time.
