Learn More →Brambletye is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school for children aged 2 to 13, set in 140 acres of countryside near East Grinstead, West Sussex, on the edge of Ashdown Forest. The school was founded in 1919 at Sidcup Place in Kent and moved to its present site in the 1930s. It is organised into a Nursery for ages 2 to 4, a Pre-Prep for ages 4 to 7 and a Prep School for ages 7 to 13.
Boarding is offered from Year 3 to Year 8. The curriculum builds strong foundations in English, Maths and Science and prepares pupils for senior school Pre-Tests, Common Entrance and scholarships, with oracy, debating and outdoor learning in the school grounds alongside specialist subject teaching.
Brambletye offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request. Full boarders stay at school every term-time weekend apart from half terms and the May Bank Holiday weekend, with no exeats. Weekly boarding and flexi boarding on set nights are also available, and minimum boarding nights apply from Year 6. Pupils come from more than 20 countries.
Boys and girls board in two separate houses within the main school building, at the centre of daily life. Boarders sleep in dormitories, grouped by age, which they are encouraged to personalise. The Head of Boarding lives on site with their family and is supported by two Houseparents, Gap assistants and the school nurses, and at least two members of staff are on duty whenever boarders are in school.
Weekday evenings combine activity and relaxation, from den building and woodland challenges to games nights, quizzes and quieter time in the house, and teachers regularly join boarders for meals. The weekend programme includes sport, baking, bushcraft, climbing and creative workshops, with outings to Ashdown Forest, the theatre, paddle boarding and cultural sites.
The learning support team offers in-class strategies, small-group interventions and one-to-one specialist help, and an Educational Psychologist works with pupils, staff and parents. Two registered nurses staff the Health Centre, ELSA-trained staff run a dedicated wellbeing space, and older pupils choose their own personal tutor.
Every international boarder at Brambletye must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Brambletye website.
Brambletye welcomes international boarders from Year 3 to Year 8, preparing them for entry to UK senior schools at 13. Most students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually, and the school offers flexible starting arrangements for children new to boarding. London Gatwick Airport is around 30 minutes away by car, and trains from East Grinstead reach London Victoria in under an hour. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils whose first language is not English may sit an EAL assessment to establish the support they need. Specialist EAL teaching covers speaking, reading, writing and comprehension alongside the main curriculum, is adapted to each child and continues throughout their time at the school, with the aim of preparing pupils for senior school entrance tests, scholarships and interviews.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Brambletye is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor both boarding and day pupils, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. For day pupils under 12, the Parent of a Child Student route may allow a parent to live in the UK during the child's studies. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Brambletye requires every international pupil to have a guardian living in the UK who can step in when needed, including during travel disruption. Full boarders leave school at half terms and over the May Bank Holiday weekend, so guardians play an important part in arrangements between home and school.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Brambletye boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Brambletye may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
