Brooke House College Overview

Brooke House College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school in Market Harborough, a market town in south Leicestershire on the main railway line to London St Pancras. Established in 1967, it teaches students aged 11 to 19, from Key Stage 3 through GCSE and A Level to a University Foundation Programme, with Intensive English and IELTS courses alongside.

A Football Academy, which can be combined with GCSE, A Level or University Foundation study, runs alongside a Motorsport Academy. Students come from more than 60 countries.

Boarding at Brooke House College

Most students board, with around 70 boarders in a college of fewer than 100 students. Boarders stay at college at weekends, and accommodation remains open over half term at no extra charge.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Students live in single-gender houses on and off the main campus, allocated by age. On campus, Burnmill House takes students under 14, the top floor of Brooke House takes students under 16, and Georges House and The Cottages take students under 18. Off-campus houses for older students include Union House, DJW House, and London, Coventry and Northampton Houses. There are no dormitories: students have single or double studies, many with en suite facilities, including every room in Union House. Every supervised house has at least one full-time resident tutor, the over-18 houses are overseen by a full-time warden, and each house has a sitting room, kitchenette, laundry and Wi-Fi.

Boarding Life

Students in Years 7 to 11 complete their evening homework under supervision in the boarding houses, and houses run their own evening and weekend events. Students meet in the PK Building, a common room with games tables and a cinema screen. Weekends bring organised day trips, often two per weekend, to destinations such as London, Cambridge, Oxford, Stonehenge, York, Cardiff Castle and the Harry Potter studios. Students can also take the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Resident tutors monitor each student's progress and welfare and meet them weekly for personal, health and social education. A full-time nurse runs the on-site medical centre, and an independent listener offers confidential support. A SENDCO coordinates individual support plans, tailored lessons, educational psychologist referrals and exam access arrangements.

International boarders at Brooke House College are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Brooke House College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Brooke House College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Brooke House College accepts international students from age 11 into Key Stage 3, GCSE, A Level and University Foundation courses. Most students join in September, and flexible start dates are offered during the year for English language study; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Non-UK applicants take the college's English placement test, and students on the Student visa route must evidence English at CEFR B1 through an IELTS qualification. Intensive English runs at three levels, can be combined with academic subjects and includes IELTS preparation, while subject-specific English classes build the vocabulary needed for mainstream lessons. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Brooke House College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies to eligible students, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Brooke House College does not appoint guardians itself. Where a student has a guardian, the college keeps a guardianship statement from the agency that parents have appointed, and it urges parents to choose a guardian accredited by AEGIS.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Brooke House College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Brooke House College designs short courses for individuals and groups. Examples include two-week and one-term high school immersion stays in which students joined Key Stage 3 classes and boarded at the college, as well as football courses combining training and boarding. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Brooke House College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Brooke House College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Brooke House College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Brooke House College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
