Learn More →Buckswood School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school at Broomham Hall in the village of Guestling, near Hastings in East Sussex. It teaches students from around 11 to 18 and is an IB World School with more than 40 nationalities.
The Junior School covers Forms 1 to 3, equivalent to Years 7 to 9. Students then take a two-year GCSE course or an intensive one-year GCSE programme with built-in English pathways, before moving to A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma or a one-year Level 3 Business Foundation Course linked to UK partner universities. Football, rugby and equestrian academies run alongside.
Boarding is central to Buckswood: around 200 students board, most of them from overseas, making up the large majority of the school. Families can choose full or weekly boarding, and the school runs exchanges with sister schools overseas and an annual celebration of its many cultures.
Boarders live in seven boarding houses, known as residences, on the school campus. Most rooms are en suite, ranging from four-bed rooms for younger boarders through triples and doubles to singles for older students. Boarders share with students from other countries rather than their own, so that English stays the common language in the house. Every student also belongs to one of seven houses, which compete in sport, academic challenges, the arts and community service.
Each evening includes around two hours of homework help followed by activities, and students plan each weekend with their house tutors from Thursday. Saturday mornings offer optional extra classes and creative courses, and in the afternoon a school coach runs into Hastings while teams play rugby, football, hockey and netball fixtures. Sundays combine quiet study time with afternoon trips to London, Brighton, Rye and Battle and activities such as climbing, watersports and the theatre.
Learning needs are handled through the Personal Educational Needs framework, which follows the SEND Code of Practice: every student completes a baseline assessment on arrival, and support can include Individual Education Plans, one-to-one Access Time tutoring, exam access arrangements and assessment by an external educational psychologist. A Wellbeing Hub and the school's own health service support students day to day.
Every international boarder at Buckswood School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Buckswood School website.
Buckswood School accepts international students into the Junior School, the two-year and one-year GCSE programmes, the Sixth Form and the Business Foundation Course, with most international students joining in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
International students take an English placement test before arrival and a fuller assessment on arrival, so that they join English classes matched to their level. The one-year GCSE runs English pathways from CEFR A2 to B1 and from B1 to B2, while the two-year GCSE offers English as a Second Language for students at B2 and above and English as an Additional Language for those at A2 to B1. Dedicated ESL classes run from Form 3, with Cambridge English exam preparation, and Sixth Form students prepare for IELTS. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Buckswood School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues visa documentation to eligible students, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
It is a condition of entry that students without a parent living in the UK have a suitable local guardian, to whom parents delegate parental responsibility, in place before the student arrives. Guardians are appointed by parents rather than by the school, which refers families to the BSA Certified Guardian scheme and AEGIS.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Buckswood School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Buckswood School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Buckswood School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Buckswood School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
