Learn More →Canford School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school in Wimborne, Dorset, for around 660 pupils aged 13 to 18. Founded in 1923, it sits in some 250 acres of grounds beside the River Stour, a few miles from the Dorset coast. Canford is part of the Canford Schools Group, a charitable group formed with Dumpton School, a prep school for ages 2 to 13.
Pupils join in Year 9, known at Canford as the Shells, or at 16 for the Sixth Form. The curriculum leads to GCSEs and then A Levels, with more than 20 A Level subjects and the Extended Project Qualification available in the Sixth Form.
Canford is a full boarding school in which around two thirds of pupils board. There is no weekly or flexi boarding, although boarders may spend Saturday nights at home during term. At least 80 per cent of boarders are on campus on an average weekend, and around one in ten pupils live overseas.
Every pupil belongs to one of ten houses, each with about 60 pupils, and the boarding houses are grouped into separate boys' and girls' areas. Shells sleep in small dormitories, Fifth Formers mostly share twin rooms and Lower Sixth pupils mostly have single study bedrooms, while Upper Sixth boarders live in single-sex residences with single en-suite rooms in the new College for Sixth Form. Each house has a resident Housemaster or Housemistress, a live-in tutor, evening tutors and matrons.
Evenings are built around two sessions of supervised prep. Saturday evenings and Sundays bring a programme of activities, while older pupils have more independent time. Shells follow their own weekend programme, which has included film and pizza nights, inter-house challenges and trips to the beach and water parks. The Health Centre has a nurse on call at all hours.
The Support for Learning Centre offers one-to-one tuition from specialist tutors and drop-in clinics, with provision for dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, ADHD and social, emotional and mental health needs. Pastoral care rests on the house and tutor systems, with onsite counselling, peer mentoring and a wellbeing centre for the Sixth Form.
International boarders at Canford School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Canford School website.
Canford School admits international boarders at two main points: Year 9, at age 13, when around 120 pupils join from UK and international schools, and the Sixth Form, at age 16, when around 30 new pupils join each year. Pupils start in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Canford does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR levels by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at the school, pupils whose first language is not English attend EAL lessons until their English reaches the standard needed to apply to UK universities. Each of these pupils has an Individual Learning Plan and weekly one-to-one English lessons, set out in the school's EAL policy.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Canford School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, so international boarders can be sponsored by the school once a place has been confirmed, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Canford publishes a guardianship policy among its school policies and is a member school of AEGIS, the accrediting body for UK guardianship organisations. Because boarders leave school at half terms and holidays, and may also go out at exeats, the guardian's role in arranging travel and accommodation is central for families living abroad.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Canford School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination, including the coach services Canford runs at exeats and half terms, and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Canford School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
