Learn More →Cardiff Sixth Form College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day college close to Cardiff city centre in South Wales, for students aged 14 to 19. Founded in 2004 as a small private tutorial centre, it has been part of Dukes Education, a UK group of independent schools and colleges, since 2017. The college also runs a second campus in central Cambridge.
The academic programme centres on A Levels, examined by the WJEC board, with most students taking four subjects and the Extended Project Qualification open to all. Younger students join a two-year or one-year GCSE course before moving into the Sixth Form, and around three quarters of the college's 370 or so students are in Years 12 and 13.
Around 300 students are full boarders, and the student body includes more than 30 nationalities as well as young people from Wales and the rest of the UK. The college offers full boarding and day places, and its boarding provision is inspected by Care Inspectorate Wales.
Students live in purpose-built, university-style residences in central Cardiff. The accommodation includes cluster flats, in which each student has a single en-suite bedroom and shares a kitchen and lounge with four to six others, apartments with two single bedrooms, and studio flats. A house system links boarding and day students across year groups, and Heads of House coordinate pastoral care for their students.
Evenings include supervised study time, and the school runs a weekend programme of activities and trips for boarders. Co-curricular life includes debating, sport, music, art, drama and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, alongside house competitions and social events, and students take on roles as reading mentors and members of the school council.
The college provides for students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, autism, physical impairments and medical conditions, and an Additional Learning Needs Coordinator gives teachers strategies for individual students. Students can refer themselves to registered nurses, mental health first aiders and a full-time wellbeing officer. A super-curricular programme, careers guidance, UCAS support and Oxbridge and medicine preparation support applications to universities in the UK and overseas.

International students join Cardiff Sixth Form College at three points: the two-year GCSE course from age 14, the one-year GCSE programme at age 15, and the two-year A Level programme at age 16. Most students start in September, and entry is selective at every stage. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Many students at the college speak English as an additional language. Spoken English is developed through a critical speaking course, debating, pupil-led assemblies and university interview practice, which help students prepare for the demands of A Level study and competitive university admissions.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa to study at the college before they turn 18. Cardiff Sixth Form College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, so international boarders can be sponsored by the college once a place has been confirmed, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
