Learn More →Cheltenham Ladies' College is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18, based on Bayshill Road in the centre of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Founded in 1853, it has more than 800 pupils and is a standalone school rather than part of a group. Facilities include the Parabola Arts Centre, a 25-metre pool and a recording studio.
The college is organised into Lower College (Years 7 to 9), Upper College, where girls take GCSEs, and the Sixth Form College, where students choose between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Around 150 new pupils join each year across the entry points at 11, 13, 14 and 16.
More than 600 girls board, around three quarters of the school, and pupils come from more than 40 countries. Full boarding is the main pattern, and the college also accepts girls aged 11 to 16 for short stays of one to three terms, living in a boarding house alongside full-time pupils.
Boarders live in eleven houses spread around the town: six junior houses for girls aged 11 to 16 and five senior houses reserved for the Sixth Form, which give older students more independence before university. Each house is led by a Houseparent with a deputy and a team of residential and non-residential pastoral assistants, and each house mixes girls of different interests and backgrounds. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
Evenings combine shared meals, prep and music practice with house events and film nights. Weekends begin with the Saturday Programme and continue with co-curricular activities, and the first and last weekends of each term are closed weekends when all boarders stay in. On other weekends girls may go out with a parent or guardian after Saturday commitments, returning for Sunday supper.
The Learning Support team offers literacy, study skills and maths coaching, mentoring and screening for specific learning difficulties, and the Good Schools Guide notes support for girls with dyslexia and dyspraxia and CReSTeD registration. Academic English is available for EAL learners, and house staff work closely with tutors and the health and wellbeing teams.
Every international boarder at Cheltenham Ladies' College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Cheltenham Ladies' College website.
Cheltenham Ladies' College admits international boarders at 11, into the first year of Lower College, at 13 for the start of the GCSE years and at 16 for the Sixth Form, with occasional places at 14 and in other year groups. Around 50 boarders join at 11 each September and around 45 students join the Sixth Form. Escorted airport transfers run at the start and end of term, and new pupils follow an induction programme. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
The college does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores, but expects international students to have a high level of English before joining, and English is assessed during entry. Girls who need it receive EAL support and specialist coaching in academic English. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Cheltenham Ladies' College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register. Students without British citizenship or settled or pre-settled status need a Child Student visa before starting, and the college supports families through the admissions and visa process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
All international students at the college must have a UK-based guardian who meets the college's educational guardianship requirements, and AEGIS or BSA accreditation is strongly recommended. Short stay pupils also need a UK guardian for the whole of their stay.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Cheltenham Ladies' College boarders. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Cheltenham Ladies' College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
