Chigwell School Overview

Chigwell School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Chigwell, Essex, for pupils aged 4 to 18. Founded in 1629 by Samuel Harsnett, Archbishop of York, it stands on a 100-acre site between Epping Forest and Hainault Forest, around ten miles from central London, with the Central Line reaching the City in about 40 minutes. It is a Church of England school of around 1,000 pupils.

Boarding is offered in the Sixth Form only, for international students aged 16 to 18 who study alongside local day pupils in a modern Sixth Form building. Students take three A Levels, with the Extended Project as an option, and receive guidance on university courses, degree apprenticeships and competitive subjects such as medicine and Oxbridge.

Boarding at Chigwell School

Around 30 international Sixth Form students board on campus, and the only boarding option is full boarding for Years 12 and 13. Each boarder is also a member of a day house, so international students take part in house competitions and school life alongside local pupils.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Each house holds up to ten students of different nationalities, living with their houseparents, who are teaching staff, and their families. Girls board in Church House, parts of which date from around 1600, in Harsnett's, named after the founder, and in Christie's House, a refurbished Grade II listed building. Boys live in Hainault House, a Victorian Gothic house of 1874 with a large garden. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

Saturday sport runs through the year, with football, hockey and cricket each taking a term. Boarders use the Sport and Wellness Centre and its 25-metre pool in the evenings. House life includes formal dinners, film nights, barbecues and a Friday dinner cooked together, and regular trips visit London's museums, exhibitions and university lectures.

Academic and Pastoral Support

House staff care for boarders at all times outside the school day, supported by a dedicated wellbeing lead. The Learning Support department offers one-to-one and group sessions for pupils with SEND, drawing on advice from outside specialists, and tutors follow each Sixth Former's post-18 plans through to results day.

International boarders at Chigwell School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Chigwell School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Chigwell School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Chigwell School admits international boarders into the Sixth Form only, at 16+, for the two-year A Level course that starts in September. Applicants are expected to be capable of the top GCSE grades, 8 or 9, in the subjects they plan to take at A Level, and the school encourages families to research A Level choices and university courses early. Because boarding is limited to Years 12 and 13, Chigwell suits students who want a two-year A Level programme within a large, long-established day school close to London. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Chigwell asks international applicants for an IELTS result or equivalent but does not publish a minimum score. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The assessment also covers mathematics and the student's chosen A Level subjects.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Chigwell School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and once a place is confirmed the school sends families guidance on the visa application process. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Chigwell School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Chigwell School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Chigwell School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Chigwell School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Chigwell School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
