Learn More →Christ College Brecon is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Brecon, Powys, in the Brecon Beacons National Park in mid Wales. Founded by Henry VIII in 1541, it educates pupils aged 4 to 18 across the Prep (Reception to Year 8), Seniors (Years 9 to 11) and Sixth Form. Estyn inspects the school and Care Inspectorate Wales regulates its boarding.
Boarders follow the same timetable as day pupils, working towards GCSEs and then A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification available alongside. Sixth Formers also attend weekly seminars on financial literacy, politics, philosophy and wellbeing, and the Second Curriculum of co-curricular activity runs through every year group.
Boarding is available from age 10, with full, weekly and flexi options, and around half of all pupils board. More than 60 overseas pupils come from over a dozen countries, and the school runs short-stay immersion placements and a Cultural and Academic Preparation (CAP) programme for international students.
Boarders aged 10 to 13 live in Alway House, a mixed house for boys and girls. From 13 to 18, girls board in de Winton House or Donaldson's House and boys in Orchard House or School House, each mixing younger and older pupils. Each house has a resident houseparent, an assistant houseparent and evening house tutors. Houses offer a mix of single, twin and dormitory rooms, with a common room for television and music.
House tutors help with evening study, and weekends bring activities and trips on site and further afield. A Saturday morning programme open to all pupils includes golf and adventure sessions with mountain biking and paddle sports, while the wider programme spans sport, music, drama, outdoor education and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
Pupils with specific learning difficulties are supported in the Additional Learning Centre, led by an ALN coordinator who is a qualified SpLD assessor with British Dyslexia Association accreditation and who manages exam access arrangements. Sessions build skills such as essay writing and time management. Each boarder has several adults to turn to, the Welfare Centre provides medical care on site, and Sixth Formers receive UCAS guidance.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
