Learn More →Cranleigh School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Cranleigh, Surrey, for pupils aged 3 to 18. The Pre-Prep and Prep share one side of the campus and the Senior School lies across the road, with pupils moving between the sites to use sports and performing arts facilities. Founded in 1865, the school also gives its name to Cranleigh International, a family of overseas schools that includes Cranleigh Abu Dhabi.
Full boarding is offered in the Senior School, which takes pupils from Year 9 to the Upper Sixth. Pupils take GCSEs and then, in the Sixth Form, usually three A Levels or BTECs with a core elective such as the Extended Project Qualification, Core Maths or a Music Diploma.
Around 72% of Senior pupils board, and most of the rest are Day Plus pupils who stay for evening activities and up to two nights a week. Families choose full or weekly boarding, priced the same, and international pupils come from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. Prep pupils can board flexibly, weekly or on single nights.
Senior pupils live in eight single-sex houses, four for boys and four for girls, each taking pupils from Year 9 to the Upper Sixth and paired with a house of the opposite sex for joint activities. Mixed-age house families meet for regular evening events, and Sixth Formers also use a refurbished Sixth Form Centre. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
Senior evenings include supervised prep, supper and a programme of activities, trips and social events. Weekly boarders go home on Saturday afternoon after fixtures, while full boarders who stay in have a weekend programme of trips and activities, with scheduled exeat weekends during term. House staff keep in regular contact with parents and guardians by phone, video and email.
The Learning Support team supports specific learning differences, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism, through in-class, small-group and individual teaching, and specialist EAL provision is available. Counselling and emotional support run as a separate service, and the Cranleigh Futures programme guides Sixth Formers towards universities in the UK and abroad.

Cranleigh School welcomes international boarders into the Senior School at Year 9 and into the Sixth Form, where around 30 new pupils join each year, and other year groups are considered when places are available. Most international students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Cranleigh asks international applicants to show English proficiency appropriate to their age but does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Where appropriate, EAL lessons form part of a pupil's timetable, and an International Pupil Liaison Officer works with the EAL teachers to help each pupil build confidence in English and access the full curriculum.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Cranleigh School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for eligible pupils, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Cranleigh requires every international boarder to have a UK-based guardian arranged through an approved guardianship provider. The guardian supports the pupil outside term time, including half terms and holidays, and acts as the main point of contact in the UK for both the family and the school.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Cranleigh School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
