Dauntsey's Overview

Dauntsey's is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18 in the village of West Lavington, near Devizes in Wiltshire. Founded in 1542 under the will of William Dauntesey, the school moved to its present site in 1895 and educates more than 800 pupils. Bath, Salisbury and Swindon are around 40 minutes away by road.

Pupils move through the Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form, studying for GCSEs and then A Levels on a six-day academic timetable. The school also owns the pilot cutter Jolie Brise, which pupils sail throughout the year.

Boarding at Dauntsey's

Around 300 pupils board, and international students join as full boarders, staying in school at weekends alongside the wider boarding community. Weekly boarding is also available, and flexi boarding is available in the First Form. There are four exeat weekends a year, when boarders go home or to their guardian.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are five boarding houses. The Manor, a Victorian mansion in 65 acres of grounds a short walk from the main campus, is a co-educational house for around 80 Lower School boarders in Years 7 to 9, with boys and girls on separate floors. From the Fourth Form to the Upper Sixth, girls board in Evans or Jeanne and boys in Fitzmaurice or Mercers. Evans houses 60 girls in a mix of single and double rooms, and Sixth Form boys in Fitzmaurice each have their own room. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a team of tutors and resident staff.

Boarding Life

At The Manor, lessons end at 4pm, followed by tea or clubs, supper at 6pm and supervised prep and activities until bedtime. Saturday morning lessons are followed by sports fixtures. Saturday night socials and Sunday outings include quiz and film nights, barbecues, theatre trips and meals out, and Sixth Formers run their own social club.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department adapts classroom teaching through individual learner profiles and offers weekly one-to-one lessons in study skills, organisation and multi-sensory literacy and maths. A medical centre staffed by nurses provides 24-hour care, supported by counsellors, a chaplain and a pupil-led listening service.

Every international boarder at Dauntsey's must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Dauntsey's

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Dauntsey's admits pupils at three main stages: Year 7 at age 11, Year 9 at age 13 and the Sixth Form at age 16. Most Lower School boarders join at 13, and the school offers several entry points and academic programmes for international students, all of whom board in the same houses as British pupils. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. For students who need extra help, English as an Additional Language lessons are available alongside the main timetable, and pupils can prepare for and sit IELTS and spoken English examinations while at the school.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Dauntsey's is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents once a place is confirmed. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Dauntsey's requires every overseas pupil, whatever their age, to have a guardian living in the UK during term time. The guardian can act in place of parents when needed and may host the pupil at exeat weekends and half terms. The school recommends guardianship organisations accredited by AEGIS or the Boarding Schools' Association.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Dauntsey's boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Dauntsey's's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Dauntsey's, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Dauntsey's is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Dauntsey's may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
