Dollar Academy Overview

Dollar Academy is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the village of Dollar, Clackmannanshire, in central Scotland. It educates more than 1,300 pupils aged 5 to 18 across a Prep School for ages 5 to 10, a Junior School for ages 10 to 12 and a Senior School for ages 12 to 18.

Pupils follow the Scottish curriculum and take SQA qualifications in the Senior School, which culminates in Form VI, the final year before university. The village is around 20 minutes from Stirling and under an hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Boarding at Dollar Academy

Around 100 boys and girls aged 10 to 18 board. Most are full boarders; a few board weekly. About half come from Scotland, and the rest from England and countries such as Germany, the USA, Bulgaria and Hong Kong.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in three houses, each run by resident Houseparents with House Tutors, and juniors and seniors live together. Heyworth House, a restored Victorian building, takes up to 25 girls in single and double bedrooms. Argyll House also takes up to 25 girls, and McNabb and Tait up to 53 boys. In Argyll and in the boys' house, younger pupils share with one or two others, while most older pupils have single rooms, some en-suite for boys. New boarders are paired with a buddy for their first weeks.

Boarding Life

After lessons, co-curricular activities and dinner, boarders complete supervised prep from 6pm to 8pm with House Tutors on hand, followed by supper in the house and activities before bedtime. On Saturdays many boarders play sports fixtures before a free afternoon or trip and inter-house socials in the evening. Sunday afternoons bring accompanied outings, such as theme parks, go-karting and concerts, and senior boarders may visit Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Each part of the school has its own Support for Learning team, offering in-class help, small-group tuition and Personal Learning Plans, and working with educational psychologists and therapists. The school reports provision for dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties, autism, mental health needs, speech and language needs, and physical, visual and hearing impairments. A Nursing Centre is staffed during term, and Form VI pupils receive university and careers guidance.

Every international boarder at Dollar Academy must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Dollar Academy

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Dollar Academy website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Dollar Academy accepts boarders from age 10, so international students can join in the Junior School or at any stage of the Senior School up to Form VI, where they study alongside Scottish and British pupils. Because the school follows the Scottish system, families planning a move should allow for the Scottish curriculum and SQA examinations when choosing a year of entry. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Dollar Academy does not publish a minimum CEFR or IELTS level. Instead, the school looks for a level of English that allows each boarder to follow lessons across the full Scottish curriculum from the start. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Dollar Academy is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents once a place has been confirmed. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Dollar Academy requires a UK guardian for every boarder whose parents live overseas and treats this as essential for UKVI purposes, while boarders whose family home is in the UK do not need one. The guardian is an emergency contact, offers support during term and provides a base in the holidays, and may be a relative, a family friend or a professional guardianship organisation.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Dollar Academy boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Dollar Academy's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Dollar Academy, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Dollar Academy is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Dollar Academy may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
