Duchy College Harrogate Overview

Duchy College Harrogate is an independent day and boarding school in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, for pupils aged 2 to 18, close to the centre of the spa town. Founded in 1893 as Harrogate Ladies' College, it now operates under the Duchy College name together with Highfield Prep School.

The school is moving from girls only to full co-education in stages: boys now join in Year 7 and Year 12, further year groups follow each September, and the whole school will be co-educational by 2030. Pupils take GCSEs followed by A Levels, usually three subjects, and many also complete the Extended Project Qualification. Leeds is about 30 minutes away by train.

Boarding at Duchy College Harrogate

Boarding has long been central to school life, with space for around 120 boarders from more than 25 countries. Families can choose termly full boarding, seven days a week, or weekly and occasional boarding. Boys and girls board in separate, access-controlled areas with single-sex bedrooms and bathrooms.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in two Victorian family homes beside the main school. Clarence is a vertical house for boarders from Year 6 to the Sixth Form, where younger pupils share bedrooms with others of the same age, while Lincoln is reserved for Sixth Form students in single or twin rooms. Both houses have common rooms, study areas with desktop computers, kitchens and private gardens, and each is run by a resident Housemistress and Assistant Housemistress supported by house tutors.

Boarding Life

Weekday prep starts at 5pm, in school for Years 7 to 10 and in house for older pupils, followed by supper, a house meeting and house activities. Saturday mornings bring prep or sports fixtures, and weekend outings range from theatre visits, York and museums to ice skating, go-karting, escape rooms, Alton Towers and the Harry Potter studios, with boarders invited to suggest ideas.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The learning support team, led by the SENCO, helps pupils with needs including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and ADHD through one-to-one sessions with higher level teaching assistants, in-class support and exam access arrangements, working alongside the Wellbeing Lead through the school's Flourish programme. Sixth Form students have their own centre.

Every international boarder at Duchy College Harrogate must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Duchy College Harrogate is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, listed under its former name, Harrogate Ladies' College, and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies needed for the visa, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Duchy College Harrogate requires families living overseas to appoint a UK-based educational guardian who lives within two hours of the school, and acceptance of a boarding place depends on an approved guardian being in place. The guardian helps in medical emergencies and with boarders' travel, including travel home at the end of term.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Duchy College Harrogate boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, coordination of travel through Leeds Bradford Airport, about 10 miles away, and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.
