Learn More →Elmhurst Ballet School is an independent, co-educational vocational ballet school for students aged 11 to 19, based in Edgbaston, Birmingham, in the West Midlands. Founded in 1923 in Camberley, Surrey, the school moved in 2004 to purpose-built premises in Edgbaston and trains its students in association with Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Students combine full vocational dance training, centred on classical ballet and supported by contemporary, jazz, pas de deux and choreography, with a full academic programme. The Lower School leads to GCSEs; the Upper School offers A Levels and the Extended Project Qualification in Years 12 and 13, followed by a Graduate Year. The 5-acre site includes seven dance studios, a 250-seat studio theatre, a medical centre and a physiotherapy centre.
Around 150 of the school's roughly 185 students are boarders, and every boarder is a full boarder, with boarding available from Year 7, at age 11, to Year 13. Girls make up around two thirds of the boarding community, and students come from across the UK and overseas.
Lower School boarders live on the Edgbaston campus, which has boarding space for around 120 students, while Upper School boarders live in accommodation a short walk from the main site. Each house has a Houseparent and Deputy Houseparent within a wider boarding team. Boarders live in supervised boarding houses with resident staff; room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry. Laundry is included as part of boarding.
Evenings include supervised study time, and the school runs a weekend programme of activities and trips for boarders. House staff also organise social events and accompany students to off-site rehearsals and performances.
A SEND lead assesses every student on entry and works with an educational psychologist. The school reports provision for a range of needs, including dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties, autism, ADHD and speech and language needs, and EAL support is available. Health and wellbeing sit at the centre of the school's approach: applicants receive physiotherapy screening, and a team of physiotherapists, a counsellor, mental health nurses and strength and conditioning coaches supports students through intensive training.
International boarders at Elmhurst Ballet School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Elmhurst Ballet School accepts boarders from Year 7, at age 11, to Year 13, the final A Level year of the Upper School. Entry at every stage is by audition, including for international applicants, and progression into the Upper School depends on a further audition. The school draws dancers from overseas as well as from across the UK. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. All lessons are taught in English, and the school provides EAL support for students whose first language is not English, alongside their academic and dance timetable.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Elmhurst Ballet School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor international students who have been offered a place. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Elmhurst Ballet School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
