Learn More →Epsom College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18 in Epsom, Surrey, close to the southern edge of London. Founded by John Propert as the Royal Medical Benevolent College, it was opened by Prince Albert in 1855, became fully co-educational in 1996 and now educates more than 1,100 pupils.
Years 7 and 8 form a day-only Lower School, and from Year 9 every pupil joins one of 13 single-sex houses. Pupils take GCSEs, then usually choose three A Levels from 24 subjects in the Sixth Form, with a Business BTEC Diploma and the Extended Project Qualification also offered.
Around 300 pupils board from Year 9 onwards. Roughly a third are full boarders, many of them from overseas, while the rest are weekly boarders who keep a bed in the house and choose which nights to stay. About 15% of pupils are international, representing around 30 nationalities.
Houses hold around 70 to 80 pupils from Year 9 to the Upper Sixth. Boys board in Forest, Granville and Holman, and girls in Crawfurd and Wilson, while White House takes girls as day pupils and Sixth Form boarders. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a Deputy, a Matron and tutors who each look after eight or nine pupils. All houses have been modernised in recent years, and room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
The school day ends at 6pm with house registration, followed by supper and prep, with subject teachers on hand to help. Lights out is staggered by age, from 10pm in Year 9 to 10.30pm in the Sixth Form, and phones are handed in overnight. Saturday morning lessons and afternoon sport are part of the week, and the school runs a weekend programme of activities and trips for boarders.
The Academic Support department helps pupils with mild special educational needs through specialist lessons outside the timetable and exam access arrangements. A Medical Centre with nurses, doctors, two counsellors and a physiotherapist is open around the clock in term time. Sixth formers also use The Mermaid, a building with a lecture theatre, seminar rooms and study spaces.
Every international boarder at Epsom College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Epsom College website.
Epsom College accepts international students as full boarders from Year 9, as Years 7 and 8 are day only. The main entry points for international boarders are Year 9 at 13 and the Sixth Form at 16, with Year 10 entry also possible at 14, and most students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Pupils need enough English to keep pace with lessons and boarding life. Applicants whose first language is not English, or who have spent less than three years at a UK school, complete an English assessment aligned to the CEFR as part of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. On arrival, international pupils are assessed to set the level of English as an Additional Language tuition they need, and many take specialist EAL lessons in place of a modern foreign language.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Epsom College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, sponsoring full boarders from Year 9 onwards, and works with a regulated immigration firm that assists families, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Epsom College requires every boarder whose parents live outside the UK to have an educational guardian. The guardian must be a British citizen or have settled status, be over 25, not be in full-time education and live within two hours of the College. Guardians provide accommodation and take responsibility during exeat weekends, short holidays and emergencies, and the College strongly recommends an AEGIS accredited guardian.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Epsom College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Epsom College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Epsom College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
