Felixstowe International College Overview

Felixstowe International College is a small independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Felixstowe on the Suffolk coast, based at Maybush House on Maybush Lane. Founded in 1996, it is registered for students aged 9 to 19 and brings together day pupils from Suffolk and international boarders from around the world under the motto "Friendship Through Education". The college has a Christian ethos.

Teaching follows the English curriculum through Key Stage 3, GCSEs at Key Stage 4 and A Levels at Key Stage 5, with examinations from Cambridge International, OCR, Edexcel and AQA. An International Foundation Programme offers overseas students a further route into British education, and small classes allow teachers to adapt tasks and subject vocabulary for students still building their English.

Boarding at Felixstowe International College

Boarding is offered on a full boarding basis during term time, with boarders in the care of the college through evenings and weekends. The boarding community is small and international. Accommodation is not provided during half terms and holidays, and students who join partway through the year receive extra induction to help them settle.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in a small, homely boarding house at the heart of the school site. Each boarder is assigned a houseparent, and boarding staff are on duty in the evenings and overnight. Room types are not published, and room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

After lessons, boarders have free time and organised activities, then share supper before supervised prep for homework and independent study, followed by time to wind down before an age-appropriate bedtime. Supervised sport and activities run after school and at weekends, and the weekend programme of trips and excursions makes use of the seaside setting and the wider region.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning support follows a graduated approach. Teachers adapt work and set regular targets, and students who need more help receive small-group or one-to-one support, specialist assessment of reading, spelling, numeracy and handwriting, and exam access arrangements such as extra time, a reader or a scribe. Students with an EHCP are supported according to their plan, and each student's English is assessed on arrival and reviewed every term.

Every international boarder at Felixstowe International College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Felixstowe International College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Felixstowe International College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Felixstowe International College admits international boarders to its secondary and sixth form years, from Key Stage 3 through GCSE and A Level study, and welcomes students at every level of English fluency. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. On arrival, every student sits a placement test in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and EAL support then follows the key stages:

  • Years 7 to 9: weekly English conversation lessons for less fluent students, with grammar, spelling and punctuation help where needed
  • Years 10 and 11: IGCSE English as a Second Language, examined at the end of Year 11
  • Years 12 and 13: weekly English and IELTS lessons with timed practice papers aimed at university entry scores

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Felixstowe International College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place is confirmed, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Felixstowe International College requires every boarder under 18 whose parents live overseas to have an educational guardian resident in the UK, appointed before the student arrives. College staff cannot act as a boarder's guardian. Because the college does not provide accommodation during half terms and holidays, the guardian's role in arranging care at those times is especially important.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Felixstowe International College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Felixstowe International College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
