Felsted School Overview

Felsted School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the village of Felsted, near Great Dunmow in north Essex, for pupils aged 4 to 18. Founded in 1564, it occupies a rural campus of more than 80 acres, about an hour from London and Cambridge, and is a member of HMC and of Round Square, an international network of schools.

Pupils take GCSEs in Years 10 and 11, then choose in the Sixth Form between the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and A Levels, which can be combined with BTEC courses.

Boarding at Felsted School

More than 300 pupils board in the Senior School, and international students from 37 countries make up around a fifth of the pupil body. Senior pupils choose full boarding of seven nights, weekly boarding of five nights or a three-night option. Three-month Short-Term Stays are available for overseas students aged 10 to 14.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

The Senior School has seven boarding houses. Boys in Years 9 to 12 board in Deacon's, Elwyn's or Gepp's and girls in Stocks's or Follyfield before moving to Windsor's or Garnetts for the Upper Sixth. Rooms range from singles and doubles to dormitories of three or four beds. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with assistants, tutors and matrons. Prep boarders from Year 5 live in Hamilton House, which takes up to 60 boys and girls and has a resident staff team.

Boarding Life

Academic staff help with prep in the evenings, and each age group has a weekly study evening in the Marshall Centre for Learning. Weekend activities for full boarders include shopping and cinema trips to Braintree, Chelmsford and Cambridge, meals out and theme park visits, and Sundays begin with brunch followed by an outing or an indoor activity.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Support for Learning department teaches pupils with special educational needs in groups of three or four, in place of a second language in Year 9 or one GCSE in Years 10 and 11, with individual specialist lessons in the Sixth Form. Pupils receiving support have Individual Education Plans and are assessed for exam access arrangements. Tutors, matrons, the chaplain and peer counsellors support pupils' wellbeing.

International boarders at Felsted School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Felsted School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Felsted School welcomes overseas full boarders from Year 7, with main entry points in Years 7, 9, 10 and 12 and other year groups considered when space allows. Most students join in September, and those aged 14 and over commit to a full GCSE, A Level or IB course. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Felsted sets minimum English levels by year of entry on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):

  • Year 9 and below (age 13 and under): CEFR B1
  • Years 10 and 11 (ages 14 and 15): CEFR B2
  • Lower Sixth, A Level route (age 16): CEFR B2
  • Lower Sixth, IB Diploma (age 16): a high B2

In Year 9 and the GCSE years, EAL classes of up to six pupils replace first-language IGCSE English and prepare pupils for the IGCSE in English as a Second Language. Sixth Form EAL lessons, including IELTS preparation, are charged separately.

Child Student Visa

Students coming from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Felsted School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, recognised by the Boarding Schools' Association for its sponsor compliance. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process.

UK Guardian Requirement

Felsted has a Guardianship Policy, and overseas pupils on Short-Term Stays must have a guardian. UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Felsted School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Short-Term Stays let students aged 10 to 14 spend one school term, roughly three months, boarding at Felsted Prep and joining its lessons with EAL support. The house stays fully staffed over exeat weekends, and a basic English level of around CEFR A2 to B1 is recommended. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Felsted School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Felsted School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Felsted School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Felsted School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
