Frewen College Overview

Frewen College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Northiam, near Rye in East Sussex, specialising in dyslexia and co-occurring specific learning difficulties, including dyspraxia and dyscalculia. Around 130 students aged 11 to 19 attend the Senior School and Sixth Form, which are set on a country estate of some 160 acres centred on Brickwall, a Jacobean mansion. The school is registered with CReSTeD.

Teaching throughout the school uses multi-sensory, dyslexia-friendly methods. Senior pupils follow the National Curriculum, taking GCSEs and vocational qualifications at Key Stage 4. The Sixth Form, opened in 2014, combines A Level and vocational courses delivered with partner colleges with Frewen's own courses and specialist support.

Boarding at Frewen College

Boarding is open from Year 7 to Year 13, subject to a suitable cohort, and is fully flexible. Many boarders stay one or two nights a week, while others board for longer periods, and boarders can remain in school at weekends. Boarders come from the UK and overseas, and the houses mark this mix with themed suppers and cultural evenings.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys board in Brickwall House, within the Jacobean mansion in the school grounds, which is divided into junior and senior areas with single rooms and four-bed junior dormitories, all en-suite. Girls live in The Warren at the far end of the campus, a house with its own private garden and a mix of single and shared rooms. The boarding team, led by a Head of Boarding, includes a Housemaster, a Housemistress and their assistants.

Boarding Life

After lessons, boarders choose from cookery and baking, sport, arts and crafts, music, board games and outdoor recreation. Weekend outings range from paddle boarding, laser tag and bowling to shopping, theme parks and London theatre trips, and Canterbury and Brighton are also within reach.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Specialist support is part of the school day, with intensive literacy and numeracy support included for pupils who need it. Full-time speech and language therapists and occupational therapists work on site, with individual therapy sessions available as additional services. Sixth formers keep access to Frewen's specialist support while studying with partner colleges.

Every international boarder at Frewen College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Frewen College welcomes international boarders from Year 7, the first year of the Senior School, through to the Sixth Form. Its overseas pupils include foreign nationals as well as children of expatriate and Armed Forces families, and students and staff come from a wide range of countries. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Frewen College accepts international students provided that English is their first language or a strong second language. Weekly one-to-one EAL support can be arranged as an additional service. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Frewen College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. The school helps overseas parents with transport arrangements: Gatwick Airport is around 75 minutes away by taxi, and Ashford International station, with high-speed trains to the Continent, is about 20 miles from the school. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Frewen College requires every student whose parents live overseas to have an adult guardian living in the UK, no more than two hours from the school. The guardian must be in place before the student joins, with full contact details held by the school. The guardian may be a relative or family friend, or parents may appoint a UK guardianship organisation.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Frewen College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Frewen College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Frewen College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Frewen College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Frewen College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
