Learn More →Gresham's School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Holt, North Norfolk, about four miles from the coast, for pupils aged 2 to 18. The Nursery and Pre-Prep, the Prep School for ages 7 to 13 and the Senior School each have their own site in the town, the Senior School occupying a 200-acre campus. Founded in 1555 through a bequest from Sir John Gresham to the Fishmongers' Company, Gresham's is a Church of England foundation.
Pupils take GCSEs and then choose between the International Baccalaureate Diploma, A Levels and BTEC courses in the Sixth Form; Gresham's has been an IB World School since 2007. Facilities include a 25m indoor pool, more than 30 tennis courts and an outdoor activity centre.
More than 250 pupils board in the Senior School, around half of the senior roll. Full boarding places are offered in all seven senior houses for entry in Year 9 and Year 12, with three home weekends a year besides half terms. In the Prep School, boarding starts at age 7 and families choose from one to seven nights a week, with many pupils moving to full boarding in the upper years.
The Senior School has four boys' houses, Farfield, Howson's, Tallis and Woodlands, and three girls' houses, Edinburgh, Oakeley and Queens', each led by a resident Housemaster or Housemistress with a team of tutors and a matron. Year 9 boarders share a small dormitory, older pupils share study bedrooms and most Sixth Formers have their own room. Prep boarders live in Kenwyn House, refurbished in 2024, under resident Houseparents.
Senior boarders take meals and evening prep in their house, with tutors on hand. Saturday evenings bring films, socials and house events, and Sunday trips range from karting and white-water rafting to beach days, Cambridge and Norwich. Prep weekends include surfing, mountain biking and beach trips.
The Learning Support Department offers one-to-one lessons with specialist teachers, small-group teaching and in-class support for needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism. A fully staffed Health Centre provides round-the-clock medical care, and school counsellors are available.

Gresham's does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils with English as an additional language can receive one-to-one lessons, Cambridge First Certificate preparation in Year 9, IGCSE English as a Second Language in Year 11 and English B within the IB Diploma, with IELTS classes where needed. An International Pupils Coordinator runs events and a pupil forum.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Gresham's School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once it is satisfied with the student's guardianship arrangements. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Gresham's requires every pupil living outside the UK to have an educational guardian, whatever their age or nationality. The guardian must be over 25, a permanent UK resident, fluent in English and available at all hours, and must live within two hours' travelling distance of the school. The guardian covers home weekends, half terms and holidays. The school strongly encourages families to choose an AEGIS accredited guardian.

British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Gresham's School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Gresham's School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
