Haileybury Overview

Haileybury is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18, set in around 500 acres of rural Hertfordshire at Hertford Heath, near Hertford, about 20 miles north of London. The school opened in 1862 on the site of the East India College, whose original buildings date from 1806. Pupils join at 11, 13 or 16.

Years 7 and 8 form the Lower School, which has its own building on the campus. Year 9 follows a curriculum designed by the school, pupils then take a wide range of GCSEs and IGCSEs, and in the Sixth Form students choose between A Levels, usually three subjects alongside an Academic Extension Programme, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Boarding at Haileybury

More than 500 pupils board, around two thirds of the school, and pupils represent more than 40 nationalities and 37 languages. Boarding is offered from Year 7 to Year 13, with full boarding alongside weekly and flexi boarding where space in a house allows. Over 90 per cent of teachers live on the campus.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Haileybury has 13 houses, with separate houses for boys and girls, and every pupil, boarder or day, belongs to one of them. Boarders in Years 7 and 8 live in Highfield House, a purpose-built Lower School house with separate wings for boys and girls. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress, supported by a deputy, matrons, resident tutors and a team of tutors. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

Boarders may go home after Saturday afternoon sport, while those who stay have a programme of trips and activities alongside quieter time in house, from house music rehearsals to birthday celebrations. The co-curricular programme ranges from climbing and sub-aqua to filmmaking and Model United Nations, and mobile phone use is managed to protect sleep.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Department helps pupils with needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism through weekly small-group work on literacy, numeracy and study skills and coaching in organisation and executive function. The Health and Wellbeing Centre is open around the clock, staffed by nurses, counsellors and a physiotherapist working with a GP team.

Every international boarder at Haileybury must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Haileybury

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Haileybury website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Haileybury admits international boarders at its three main entry points: Year 7 at age 11, Year 9 at age 13 and Year 12 for the Sixth Form. International applicants follow the same admissions route as UK candidates, with the school taking the education system of their home country into account, and most join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Haileybury expects applicants to speak and write English proficiently by the time they arrive, but does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS scores for each year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at school, pupils with English as an additional language can receive individual or small-group tuition from a specialist EAL teacher, focused on academic writing, language structures and subject vocabulary, with support for GCSE and A Level examinations and preparation for the English tests required by universities.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Haileybury is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and sponsors boarders in full-time study, though not day pupils. A visa compliance officer guides families through the requirements, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Haileybury requires every pupil whose parents live overseas to have an educational guardian living in the UK. The guardian may be a relative or close family friend but must be over 25, and the school directs families to AEGIS, the accrediting body for UK guardianship organisations.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Haileybury boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination to and from Hertfordshire and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Haileybury's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Haileybury, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Haileybury is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Haileybury may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
