Hazlegrove Overview

Hazlegrove is an independent, co-educational pre-prep and prep school for day pupils and boarders aged 2 to 13, set in around 200 acres of grounds at Sparkford in south Somerset. It is part of the King's Bruton Foundation, which also runs King's Bruton, a senior school less than ten miles away.

Facilities include a sports hall, an indoor swimming pool, art and design technology studios and a theatre. At 13, around four in ten pupils move on to King's Bruton, and others go to a wide range of independent senior schools, including Blundell's and Bradfield.

Boarding at Hazlegrove

Around 100 pupils board, roughly 70 of them full boarders and 30 flexi boarders. Boarding runs from Year 3, at age 7, to Year 8. Full boarders remain at school at weekends with a programme of activities, and the school recommends that overseas pupils stay for at least one year.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

The three boarding houses stand in separate buildings on the estate, each run by a resident married couple as houseparents, with matrons and gap assistants. Blackford is the girls' house for Years 3 to 8, with six dormitories of five to twelve beds; younger girls share in mixed-age groups, while Years 7 and 8 sleep in their own year groups. Lankester House takes junior boys in Years 3 to 6 in six themed dormitories of six beds, and School House is home to senior boys in Years 7 and 8. At least four adults are on duty in each house every night.

Boarding Life

Evenings include house activities such as hot chocolate nights, quizzes, board games and film nights. Hazlegrove describes itself as an unplugged school, so boarders hand their phones to houseparents. The weekend programme runs on and off site, from trips to the beach, water parks and museums to fishing, tree climbing and the school's go-kart track.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department has four specialist teachers experienced in dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and attention difficulties. Lessons follow individual plans, including structured multisensory dyslexia programmes, literacy and maths support, study skills and touch typing, with progress reviewed each term. The school works with local educational psychologists when a full assessment is needed.

Every international boarder at Hazlegrove must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Hazlegrove

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Hazlegrove website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Hazlegrove accepts boarders from age 7, so international pupils can join at any point from Year 3 to Year 8 before moving on to senior school at 13. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. The school recommends a stay of at least one year and also mentions shorter placements of one or two terms. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Hazlegrove does not publish fixed CEFR or IELTS levels. Applicants must show enough English to cope with the curriculum, and non-native speakers are assessed in reading and writing during the application; British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. EAL tuition is given individually and in small groups, including preparation for Cambridge English qualifications at KET, PET and FCE level.

Child Student Visa

Pupils from outside the UK will usually need a Child Student visa. Hazlegrove is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through the King's Bruton Foundation; a Letter of Parental Consent and a parent questionnaire are required before the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is issued, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Hazlegrove requires every pupil whose parents live overseas to have a UK educational guardian for the whole of their time at the school. The guardian must be appointed before the pupil arrives in the UK and should live within about two hours of the school. The school is a member of AEGIS and expects families to choose a reputable guardianship organisation.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Hazlegrove boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Hazlegrove's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Hazlegrove, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Hazlegrove is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Hazlegrove may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
