Learn More →Hereford Cathedral School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Hereford, Herefordshire, educating around 700 pupils aged 3 to 18. The Senior School and Sixth Form are based in the Cathedral Close, with the Nursery and Junior School on a separate site nearby. The school grew from a song school for Hereford Cathedral, most likely founded in 676 AD, and still educates the Cathedral choristers. It is a member of the Three Choirs Schools Group, a partnership with King's Gloucester and King's Worcester in which each school remains independent.
Boarding is available from age 11, and boarders follow the same timetable as day pupils, taking GCSEs and then A Levels in the Sixth Form alongside the school's own HCS Diploma.
Boarding is a small part of a mainly day school, with around 30 boarders from the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Full boarding and flexi boarding are offered, and international students may instead live with local host families selected by the school.
Boarders live in Wilmot House, a refurbished Georgian building in countryside a short minibus ride from the city centre. Bedrooms are en-suite, single or shared, and the house has a common room, an oak-panelled dining room and grounds with football and basketball areas. A resident team of five boarding staff, led by a housemistress, provides care around the clock.
After lessons, boarders join the same clubs as day pupils before evening prep in their rooms, followed by social time such as pool, quizzes and film nights. At weekends, staff lead supervised trips to cities including Oxford, Bath, Cardiff and Bristol, along with activities such as go-karting and climbing. The boarding house stays open over half-term holidays.
Form Tutors and Heads of Year oversee each pupil's wellbeing and progress alongside the boarding team, and students can see the school nurse and a counsellor. Peer mentors and dedicated international staff offer further support. Specialist learning support is not detailed publicly, so families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Each international pupil has weekly lessons in English as an Additional Language alongside the mainstream timetable, and international students sit IELTS examinations, which supports both academic study and university applications from the Sixth Form.
