Learn More →Horris Hill is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school at Newtown, just south of Newbury on the Berkshire and Hampshire border, for children aged 2 to 13. The school occupies more than 65 acres of countryside with a swimming pool, tennis courts, a cricket pitch and a theatre space. Founded in 1888 by a master from Winchester College, Horris Hill was a boys' prep school until girls joined all year groups in 2023. The school is part of Forfar Education.
Horris Hill is a small school of around 110 pupils, and most stay until the end of Year 8 before moving on to senior schools at 13, most often Winchester and Harrow.
The school has around 30 boarders, roughly two thirds of them full boarders. Children can start with flexi boarding from Year 3, moving on to weekly and then full boarding as they grow older; boarding is optional. Boarders come from countries including Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Spain, Nigeria and Japan, and international pupils can also join for a two-week immersion stay.
Younger boarders in Years 3 to 6 live in The Hill, a co-educational junior house in the main building with four single-sex dormitories. Older pupils move on to separate boys' and girls' boarding, with boys from Year 7 living in The Wood in the heart of the grounds. Pupils are grouped by age and have a say in who they share a room with, and each house is run by a Houseparent team supported by resident staff.
Evenings bring crafts, board games, sunset golf and football, and older pupils complete a supervised prep hour. The wider activity programme includes archery, judo, tennis, chess, rugby and photography. On Saturday afternoons boarders can swim or join table tennis tournaments, Saturday evenings often feature film nights, and on Sundays boarders head off site to explore the local area.
Teaching follows a Quality First Teaching approach, with targeted one-to-one or small-group intervention for pupils who need it. The school supports pupils with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, as well as autism, and offers limited EAL provision for international pupils.
Every international boarder at Horris Hill must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Horris Hill website.
Horris Hill accepts international pupils of all nationalities, as well as children of expatriate and UK Forces families. Many international pupils, particularly those for whom English is a second language, join in Year 3 or Year 4. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
The school expects a good level of English from international pupils and does not publish a minimum CEFR or IELTS level. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Limited EAL support is available once pupils have joined.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Horris Hill is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies where required, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Horris Hill requires every child from overseas to have an AEGIS-approved guardian in the UK, living within reasonable distance of the school. The guardian may be called if the child is unwell and can look after them during exeat weekends and shorter school holidays.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Horris Hill boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.
Horris Hill runs a two-week Short Stay Immersion programme in June, during the summer term, giving international children a taste of British prep school boarding. Participants join the school's boarding community for the whole fortnight, weekends included, with an activity programme, trips and a weekend programme that has featured a West End theatre visit and a day at LEGOLAND, finishing with a graduation. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Horris Hill is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Horris Hill may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
