Kimbolton School Overview

Kimbolton School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the village of Kimbolton, near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, for girls and boys aged 3 to 18. It is organised in four divisions: a Pre-School, a Prep School for ages 3 to 11, a Senior School for ages 11 to 16 and a Sixth Form. Its historic Castle is part of school life, and the school is a member of HMC.

Senior pupils follow GCSE courses, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels alongside BTEC qualifications, a WJEC course in Food Science and Nutrition and the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Kimbolton School

Boarding is open to boys and girls aged 11 to 18, with around 30 nationalities represented. Full boarders stay at school on weekdays and at weekends throughout the term, apart from a week-long mid-term break and the early May bank holiday. Weekly boarding, flexi boarding on up to three set nights and occasional nights are also offered, subject to availability.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys board in Kimbolton House and girls in White House, both on the village High Street and backing onto the school grounds. Younger pupils share rooms, while older boarders have study bedrooms closer to university accommodation. Each house is run by a resident houseparent team with a matron, and the Health Centre provides medical cover.

Boarding Life

After lessons, boarders take part in sport, clubs and hobbies before supper. During evening prep, pupils in the First to Third Forms work in a supervised prep room, while older boarders may study in their own rooms, before free time for films, crafts, reading or music. Weekends bring sports matches and rehearsals, and the boarders' programme runs a trip every weekend, from escape rooms, go-karting and theme parks to shopping, along with themed evenings in the Castle.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Academic Support department works with pupils who have dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and ADHD, and helps pupils on the autistic spectrum with organisation and social skills. Support ranges from one-to-one sessions to small-group and in-class help. International students receive EAL lessons in small groups, and the Sixth Form has its own academic support.

Every international boarder at Kimbolton School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Kimbolton School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Kimbolton School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Kimbolton School accepts boarders from age 11, and its main joining points for the Senior School are at 11+ and 13+, with applications also taken for Years 8 and 10, and at 16+ for the Sixth Form. The school's guidance for international families highlights entry to the Senior School from Year 9 and to the Sixth Form. Pupils join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Senior School pupils whose first language is not English have small-group EAL lessons alongside their academic subjects, working towards the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in English as a Second Language, aligned with CEFR levels A2 to B2, and Cambridge English exams. Sixth Form students prepare for IELTS Academic, and an international society and international evenings help students settle.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Kimbolton School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and an appointed UK guardian is a condition of the school's visa sponsorship, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

All international pupils under 18 must have a UK-based educational guardian who is at least 25, not in full-time education and living within 60 miles of the school. Guardians and adults in their household need an enhanced DBS check. The guardian cares for the pupil during holidays and the exeat weekend, arranges travel and airport meetings, and attends parents' evenings. The school belongs to the BSA Guardianship Scheme and accepts guardians appointed through AEGIS or BSA accredited organisations.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Kimbolton School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.
