King's School Rochester Overview

King's School Rochester is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Rochester, Kent, for pupils aged 2 to 18. Founded in 604 AD, it is one of the oldest schools in the world and the choir school of Rochester Cathedral, set in the cathedral precinct. A Junior School for ages 4 to 13 leads into the Senior School and Sixth Form. High-speed trains reach London St Pancras in under 40 minutes.

Senior pupils take GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels alongside BTEC courses. For international students aged 15 to 16 who have studied outside the UK, the one-year King's Foundation Year provides a direct route into A Level study in the Sixth Form.

Boarding at King's School Rochester

Boarding is open to UK and international pupils from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, with boarders from many countries alongside a good proportion of British pupils. Families can choose full, weekly, flexi or occasional boarding. Full boarders stay at school at weekends without exeats, and there is no Saturday school. International students may also board for one or two terms or a single year.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders form one co-educational community based in St Margaret's House, which has been fully refurbished, and the historic School House, where Foundation Year students live; the Good Schools Guide lists around 65 beds. Every bedroom is en-suite with single beds and storage, and short-term boarders normally have a room to themselves when space allows. A Housemaster leads a team of boarding tutors, all teachers at the school, with a house parent on duty every day.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings follow a set routine: first prep after school clubs, dinner, a second prep for younger pupils and lights out staggered by age. At weekends boarders use the gym, swimming pool and basketball court, and trips run to London museums and West End shows, Canterbury, Dover Castle and theme parks.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every senior pupil belongs to one of four Houses, Crick, Parker, Storrs and Whiston, and has a House Tutor who follows academic progress and wellbeing. A Chaplain, a counsellor, a Wellbeing Coordinator and a School Nurse support pupils, and the Good Schools Guide lists provision for autism and ADHD.

Every international boarder at King's School Rochester must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

King's School Rochester accepts boarders from age 11. Most international students join at the standard entry points of Year 9 at 13, Year 10 at 14 or Year 12 at 16, and younger pupils are sometimes admitted to Year 7 when their English is strong enough. Students aged 15 to 16 can join the one-year King's Foundation Year before starting the Sixth Form. Entry is in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

King's School Rochester is not a language school. The minimum level is IELTS 5.5, with IELTS 6.0 preferred, and English is assessed before an offer is made. Before arrival, an EAL specialist plans an individual programme, taught in one-to-one lessons pitched at each student's level.

Child Student Visa

Students from outside the UK will usually need a Child Student visa. King's School Rochester is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

The school treats a UK education guardian as essential for every international boarder, arranged before the student arrives. The guardian acts in place of parents, must live in the UK within a suitable distance of the school, speak English and not live in student accommodation. Boarders leave the house at half terms and during the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for King's School Rochester boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Alongside full courses, the school accepts international boarders for one or two terms or a single year, subject to availability. Short-term boarders live in the boarding house and remain at school at weekends. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.
