Kirkham Grammar School Overview

Kirkham Grammar School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Kirkham, near Preston in Lancashire, for pupils aged 3 to 18, with around 850 on roll. The school dates its foundation to 1549, has occupied its Ribby Road site since 1911, and became independent and co-educational in 1979.

Boarding is available from age 11. Pupils take GCSEs in the Middle School, then most sixth formers study three A Level or BTEC subjects, with BTEC courses in Business, Science and Sport, alongside the Combined Cadet Force and an enrichment programme.

Boarding at Kirkham Grammar School

Kirkham is principally a day school with a boarding facility: its single boarding house has room for around 90 pupils from the UK and overseas, with more than 50 boarders in recent figures. Full and weekly boarding are offered, with flexi boarding when space allows and trial nights for prospective boarders.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys and girls share the communal areas of one co-educational house but sleep in separate areas. Younger pupils share rooms for up to four, while older pupils have smaller studies or single rooms. The house has a games room, a digital lounge, a quiet room, a snack kitchen, a laundry and a medical surgery. The Headmaster and house parents live in the house, and staff support is available day and night.

Boarding Life

Boarders take breakfast and dinner in the school canteen, with evening prep at scheduled times in the library, and can use the sports hall, all-weather pitch and fitness suite after lessons. Activities include cinema trips, barbecue days, cookery, sports fixtures, visits to nearby towns, the Blackpool Illuminations and themed evenings such as Chinese New Year.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Heads of Year and form tutors oversee each pupil's progress, and a house system links pupils of all ages through inter-house competitions. The Medical Centre provides first aid and care plans, many staff hold Mental Health First Aid training, pupils can talk in confidence to an Independent Listener, and a Head of Boarding (Pastoral) supports boarders. Specific learning support provision is not published, so families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

Every international boarder at Kirkham Grammar School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Kirkham Grammar School admits boarders from age 11, with the main entry points at 11+ and 16+ and entry at 12+, 13+ and 14+ also possible. Boarding places can be taken up at other stages when space in the boarding house allows. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Kirkham Grammar School does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR levels, but pupils need fluent English to follow a curriculum taught entirely in English, and lessons in English as an Additional Language are provided for those who need them. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Kirkham Grammar School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Kirkham Grammar School requires every boarder whose parents live overseas to have a UK guardian, appointed before the pupil arrives, who acts in loco parentis while the pupil is in the UK. The guardian takes responsibility for the pupil during exeats, half terms and holidays, and for travel, visas and medical matters where parents cannot, and the guardian's details must reach the school before the school year begins.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Kirkham Grammar School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.
