Lathallan School Overview

Lathallan School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school at Johnshaven, near Montrose, on the north-east coast of Scotland, for children from six months to 18 years. The nursery, Junior School and Senior School share one site at Brotherton Castle, a 19th-century house in around 60 acres of coastal grounds, about 55 minutes by road from Aberdeen Airport. Founded in Fife in 1930, the school moved to Brotherton Castle in 1949, became co-educational in 1976 and opened its Senior School in 2006.

Boarding is offered from age 11. Pupils follow the Scottish curriculum, taking SQA National 5 qualifications and then Highers and Advanced Highers, in classes averaging 12 pupils within a school of around 200. Outdoor learning is a defining feature, recognised by the Gold Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Mark.

Boarding at Lathallan School

Lathallan accepts boarders aged 11 to 18 and offers full boarding, seven days a week, alongside weekly boarding and flexi boarding of at least two nights a week. Boarding has been part of the school since 1930. International pupils can join for a single term, a full academic year or their whole secondary education. Current boarder numbers are available on request.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in Brotherton Castle itself, in a single Boarding House looked after by house staff and the school's boarding and pastoral care team, who work in partnership with parents. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

The boarding day starts with breakfast together before registration. Evenings combine scheduled prep, supported by teaching staff, with a programme of activities, and senior pupils spend Friday afternoons on options such as farming, golf and rock climbing. Weekends are mainly for rest, with at least one organised outing on Saturday or Sunday, from walks in the Angus glens and along the coast to minibus trips to museums and the mountains, Edinburgh's Christmas markets and rugby at Murrayfield.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every pupil has a form tutor and belongs to one of the school's houses, and senior Peer Mentors offer advice and guidance to other pupils. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

International boarders at Lathallan School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Lathallan School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Lathallan School accepts international boarders from age 11, across the Senior School years from S1 to S6. Families can choose a stay of a single term, a full academic year or a complete secondary education, and international pupils follow the same Scottish curriculum as their classmates, with National 5 courses leading on to Highers and Advanced Highers in the final years. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Lathallan does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels for international applicants. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The school presents its term-length immersion as a way for international pupils to build their language skills, and new arrivals join small class groups, averaging 12 pupils, with pastoral guidance from the first day.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Lathallan School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor international pupils once a place has been accepted, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Lathallan's nearest airport is Aberdeen, about 55 minutes from the school by road, so travel at the start and end of each term and at half terms is usually arranged through that airport.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Lathallan School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Lathallan School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Lathallan School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
