Lockers Park School Overview

Lockers Park School is an independent day and boarding preparatory school for boys aged 4 to 13 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. The Pre-Prep, for boys aged 4 to 7, and the Prep School, for ages 7 to 13, share a 23-acre estate of woodland, fields and pitches around a Georgian house, The Lockers, around 30 minutes by train from central London. Founded in 1874 to prepare boys for Rugby School, Lockers Park has offered boarding ever since. It has around 200 pupils, a Church of England affiliation and a partnership with Harrow School.

Boarding is offered from age 7. Boys are prepared for Common Entrance and scholarship examinations at 13, and leavers move on to senior schools including Harrow, Rugby, Winchester, Eton, Radley and Oundle. Saturday School adds further lessons and senior school preparation.

Boarding at Lockers Park School

Boys board from Year 3 to Year 8, and families can choose full, weekly or flexi boarding, so a boy can board as often as suits the family. Close to 40 boys are boarders, with around 30 in the house on a typical night, and a significant share of the full boarders come from overseas.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live together in a single boarding house run by House Parents, supported by teaching staff and matrons. Dormitories sleep two to four boys, and the house has a common room for the evenings. The boarding house is smartphone-free.

Boarding Life

Staff oversee evening prep and bedtime, and evenings include activities such as table football, film nights and reading before lights out. The Boarding Passport sets seven goals for each year group, and stars earned for kindness, good behaviour and citizenship can be exchanged for prizes. The House Parents also arrange special boarding events, including sports, city excursions and local trips.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Enrichment Area supports boys with needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autistic traits and speech and language difficulties. Specialist teachers give one-to-one sessions on literacy, numeracy, memory, processing speed and organisation, small groups cover phonics, spelling, comprehension and social skills, and each boy receiving support has a personalised learning plan. Classes are small, and pastoral staff offer mentoring and emotional wellbeing support.

Every international boarder at Lockers Park School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Lockers Park School accepts international boarders from age 7, in Years 3 to 8, and prepares them for transfer to UK senior independent schools at 13. Boys from overseas can also join the Pre-Prep as day pupils while their parents live locally, and board later once the family returns home. The main intake is in September, and boys can usually join mid-term as well. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Lockers Park does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Boys who need it receive one-to-one English tuition to build fluency ahead of senior school, and bespoke learning programmes help international pupils adjust from their own education system and language.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Lockers Park School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and arranges a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies for pupils who need one, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Boys living overseas must have an appointed guardian in the UK. Parents are responsible for arranging guardianship, and the school can suggest guardianship agencies. Lockers Park is about 50 minutes from London Heathrow and around 30 minutes by train from London Euston, which helps guardians manage travel at exeats, half terms and the ends of terms for younger boarders.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Lockers Park School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.
