Learn More →Lomond School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute, a coastal town on the Firth of Clyde close to Loch Lomond. Around 330 pupils aged 3 to 18 are taught on a single campus, with the boarding house a two-minute walk from the main school. Lomond was formed in 1977 through the amalgamation of Larchfield Academy, founded in 1845, and St Bride's School for Girls.
Pupils work towards SQA National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications. As an IB World School, Lomond also offers the IB Diploma Programme and the IB Career-related Programme in the senior years.
Around 50 boarders, split evenly between boys and girls, board from age 9 to the final year of school. Most come from Scotland and the rest of the UK, with international pupils from countries such as China, Hong Kong, Brazil, the USA, Spain and Germany. Families can choose full, weekly or flexible boarding, and flexible nights can be arranged on a regular or occasional basis where space allows.
All boarders live in Burnbrae House, a purpose-built house opened in 2003, with boys and girls on separate floors divided by a biometric security system. Most boarders share twin en-suite rooms, and the house has common rooms designed by the residents, a family-style kitchen, a basement gym and its own artificial pitches. Houseparents, resident tutors and Matrons look after the boarders, and breakfast and the evening meal are served in the house.
Boarders return to the house after lessons or co-curricular activities, and each evening includes a structured homework period with tutorial support from resident staff and teachers. Weekends bring cinema trips, sports fixtures, theatre outings, outdoor education and residential trips. Year group, food and house committees give boarders a say in how the house is run, and S6 Heads of House encourage younger pupils to get involved.
Two full-time learning support teachers help pupils with needs such as dyslexia and dyspraxia. International pupils who need help with English have two to three EAL lessons a week, individually or in small groups, and most sixth year leavers go on to university.
Every international boarder at Lomond School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Lomond School website.
Lomond School accepts boarders from the age of 9, so international pupils can join in the upper primary years, at any stage of the Senior School or for the final years of Higher or IB study. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Lomond School does not publish a minimum IELTS or CEFR level. New international pupils complete an online assessment, which is reviewed alongside previous school reports to identify any gaps in learning. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils who need support have two to three lessons a week with an EAL-trained teacher.
Students coming to the UK from overseas for six months or more will usually need a Child Student visa. Lomond School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and, as a general rule, sponsors boarding pupils only. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Lomond School requires all parents who live overseas to name a UK-based guardian, who supports the pupil, acts for the parents when they cannot be reached and is the school's emergency contact. The school refers families to the AEGIS list of accredited guardianship organisations.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Lomond School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination for arrivals through Glasgow Airport and vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Lomond School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Lomond School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Lomond School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
