Longridge Towers School Overview

Longridge Towers School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school near Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, close to the Scottish Borders. Around 300 pupils aged 3 to 18 share a single rural campus centred on a Victorian mansion built in the 1870s. The school was founded in 1983 by a parent-led charitable trust on the site of the former St Mary's Convent school, run by the Ursuline Sisters, and has been co-educational from the start.

The Junior School leads into a Senior School where pupils in Forms 1 to 5 work towards GCSEs. Sixth Form students choose from A Levels across the sciences, humanities, languages and creative subjects, with BTEC Sport and the Extended Project Qualification also offered.

Boarding at Longridge Towers School

Boarding is open from age 8, in the upper Junior School, through to the Sixth Form, and families can choose full, weekly or flexi boarding. Recent international boarders have come from Hong Kong, China, Korea, Germany and Spain. Longridge Towers School offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in one boarding house, with boys and girls on separate floors. Rooms are single or shared by up to three pupils, each with a study area, and sixth formers have en-suite rooms wherever possible. All boarders share a large lounge and a games room with pool and table tennis. Non-teaching House Parents, two of them on duty at all times, care for the boarders, supported by the School Matron.

Boarding Life

On weekdays, supervised prep runs for an hour after school, followed by supper and bedtimes set by age. Boarders also use the sports hall and grounds in their free time. Weekend outings are planned with the boarders each week, from beach days, ice skating and go-karting to theatres, Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh and Beamish Museum.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Each form tutor looks after about nine pupils, with Heads of Year and a Head of Pastoral Care overseeing the system, and new pupils are paired with a buddy. The Good Schools Guide reports that around a quarter of pupils receive additional learning support. Wellbeing is supported through PSHE and in-school counselling.
