Learn More →Loughborough Grammar School is an independent day and boarding school for boys in Loughborough, Leicestershire, for pupils aged 10 to 18. Founded in 1495, it has occupied its Burton Walks site near the town centre since 1852. The school is part of the Loughborough Schools Foundation, a charitable group that also runs Loughborough High School for girls, Fairfield Prep School and a nursery, and it shares its campus with the High School.
Boys take GCSEs and then A Levels in a Sixth Form of around 250 students, and boarding is open from age 11, so international pupils can board from the first year of senior school to university entrance. Loughborough has direct trains to London in about 75 minutes.
The two boarding houses have just over 70 beds, keeping the community small, with boarders from the UK, Eastern Europe, Africa, India, Hong Kong and mainland China. Full boarding is offered alongside weekly and flexible boarding, and full boarders stay in school at weekends.
Denton House takes junior boarders and some seniors, while School House accommodates up to 41 boys aged 14 to 18. Boys in Years 7 to 10 share rooms of two to four, boys in Years 11 and 12 normally share in pairs, and most Year 13 boarders have a single room. Both houses have kitchens where boys can prepare their own food, and Housemasters lead them with house staff available 24 hours a day.
Boarders return to their house by 4pm for homework time, sport and free time, and some duty staff are subject teachers who help with prep. Weekends bring brunch and a Cultural Programme, recognised by the Boarding Schools' Association, that helps boarders adjust to life in Britain, with trips to cities such as London, York, Oxford and Cambridge, a national park and a Premiership football match. Boys can also join more than 140 clubs and activities.
The Good Schools Guide records support for specific learning difficulties, autism, social, emotional and mental health needs, moderate learning difficulties and visual or hearing impairment, though specialist teaching is limited. Nurses, counsellors, an independent listener and a weekly school doctor's clinic support boarders' wellbeing.

No minimum test scores are published by year of entry, but boys applying for GCSE or A Level courses are expected to have advanced English. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Enrolled boarders receive EAL support after an initial assessment:
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Loughborough Grammar School can sponsor this visa through the Loughborough Schools Foundation, a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Loughborough Grammar School requires every overseas boarder to have a UK guardian aged over 25 who acts in place of the parents, arranges travel, provides a suitable home during holidays and keeps in regular contact with the school. Boarders leave school for each half term, and the school recommends guardianship organisations that are members of AEGIS.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Loughborough Grammar School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
