Marlborough College Overview

Marlborough College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 13 to 18 in the market town of Marlborough, Wiltshire. Founded in 1843 to educate the sons of Church of England clergy, it admitted girls into the Sixth Form in 1968 and became fully co-educational in 1989. Around 1,000 pupils study on a campus of some 286 acres on the edge of the town.

Pupils join at 13 or 16. GCSEs are taken from around 25 subjects, and the Sixth Form offers around 30 A Level subjects alongside the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Marlborough College

Marlborough runs as a seven-day boarding school, and more than 950 of its pupils are full boarders, drawn from 36 nationalities. More than 80% of pupils stay at school on term-time weekends, and boarders go home for an exeat every third weekend.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are 16 boarding houses: six for girls, six for boys and four mixed houses, which take boys in every year group and girls in the Sixth Form, plus a separate co-educational day house. Most houses are home to around 65 to 70 pupils, and each is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with resident tutors and a Dame. Some, such as Preshute, have their own dining rooms.

Boarding Life

The day begins around 7.30am. Every evening, prep runs in houses from 7.30pm to 9pm with staff on duty, followed by supervised activities until 10pm, when everyone is checked in. Saturday morning lessons are followed by matches, with around 50 teams playing each weekend, or cultural and adventurous trips, and evenings bring dances, quizzes and film nights. Sundays begin with brunch and chapel, and houses run outings such as raft building and camping for younger pupils.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Centre has five full-time specialists in specific learning difficulties, who give one-to-one help to around 100 pupils with needs such as moderate dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD, although the school is not designed for moderate to severe difficulties. The department also provides English as an Additional Language support, and pastoral care runs through the houses, the medical team and the chaplaincy.

International boarders at Marlborough College are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Marlborough College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Marlborough College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Marlborough College admits international pupils at two main points: 13+ entry into Year 9 and 16+ entry into the Sixth Form in Year 12. New pupils start in September, at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term, and overseas candidates are assessed on the same basis as UK applicants. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Marlborough College does not publish a minimum IELTS or CEFR score, but it expects every overseas candidate to have a good command of English, and the entrance assessments are taken in English. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils who need it receive flexible English as an Additional Language support from the Learning Support Department.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Marlborough College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and once a place has been offered and accepted it issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number that pupils need for their application, subject to the usual requirements. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Marlborough College asks all overseas pupils to have a guardian in the UK. Because boarders leave school for an exeat every third weekend, as well as for half terms and holidays, the guardian plays a regular part in school life, arranging travel to and from Wiltshire, providing a home when pupils are away from school and keeping in touch with house staff on behalf of parents.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Marlborough College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Marlborough College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Marlborough College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Marlborough College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Marlborough College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
