Mayfield School Overview

Mayfield School is an independent Catholic boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18 in the village of Mayfield, East Sussex, about an hour from London. It occupies the Old Palace of Mayfield, a 75-acre countryside estate given in 1863 to the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, the Catholic order founded by Cornelia Connelly, and the first pupils were taught there in 1872.

Girls take around nine GCSEs, with International English replacing English Language for those whose first language is not English, then usually three A Levels in the Sixth Form, often with an Extended Project Qualification. The campus includes a purpose-built Equestrian Centre where girls can stable their own horses.

Boarding at Mayfield School

Around half of the school's 400 or so pupils board, most of them full boarders, from more than 25 nationalities. Full boarding is available from Year 7, and day girls can also board for one or more nights a week. Many boarders stay for weekend activities, and a school minibus runs to and from central London on Fridays and Sundays for those travelling home.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in houses organised by age. Leeds House is home to Years 7 and 8 in rooms for two to four girls, St Gabriel's House takes Years 9 and 10, and St Dunstan's, the senior house for around 65 girls in Years 11 to 13, has double and single rooms, with individual rooms for Year 13. Each house has a Housemistress, assistant staff and resident tutors, with a member of staff sleeping in overnight.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings combine supervised study, timed by year group, with activities such as yoga, Zumba, crafts and drama. Weekends mix study, riding, cookery and Sunday Mass with outings to London, Brighton and Tunbridge Wells, ice skating and high ropes.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department offers individual, paired and small-group lessons in literacy, numeracy, study skills and organisation, with an Individual Learning Plan for each girl and exam access arrangements. Support is available for needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism and speech and language difficulties. A purpose-built wellbeing centre has registered nurses providing 24-hour term-time cover and an on-site counsellor, and sixth formers receive one-to-one mentoring.

Every international boarder at Mayfield School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Mayfield School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Mayfield School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Mayfield School welcomes international boarders at the main entry points of Year 7 (11+), Year 9 (13+) and Year 12 (16+), with a small number of places at 12+ and 14+. Most students join in September, mid-year transfers are considered individually, and the school does not offer places lasting less than one academic year. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Mayfield assesses English before entry and again on arrival, using the CEFR scale. The minimum levels accepted by year of entry are:

  • Years 7 and 8 (ages 11 and 12): elementary level
  • Years 9 and 10 (ages 13 and 14): lower intermediate level
  • Sixth Form (age 16): upper intermediate level

Girls who need support take International English lessons in small ability groups, usually four hours a week, working towards Cambridge English qualifications, IGCSE English as a Second Language and, in the Sixth Form, IELTS.

Child Student Visa

Students from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Mayfield School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and guides families through sponsorship, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Mayfield requires every visa-holding international student, and any pupil whose parents live overseas, to have a nominated UK guardian until she leaves the school, even after turning 18. The guardian must be at least 25, English-speaking, a British citizen or settled in the UK, and live ideally within three hours of the school, and the school strongly recommends an accredited guardianship organisation. The guardian arranges travel for exeats and half terms and provides care when a girl cannot be in school.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Mayfield School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular liaison with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Mayfield School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Mayfield School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Mayfield School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Mayfield School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
