Learn More →Merchiston Castle School is an independent boarding and day school on a 100-acre campus in Colinton, on the south-western edge of Edinburgh. Its Senior School and Sixth Form are for boys, making it the only all-boys senior boarding school in Scotland, while The Forest at Merchiston offers co-educational nursery and junior education from age 3. Founded in 1828 by Charles Chalmers, the school moved to Merchiston Tower in 1833 and to Colinton in 1930.
Boys mainly follow GCSEs and A Levels, with selected Scottish qualifications and BTEC courses available where appropriate. A long-standing partnership with St George's School for Girls brings joint concerts, debating, expeditions and social events.
Around two thirds of the school's 400 or so pupils board, and boarders come from across the UK and overseas. Full boarding is offered from Fourth Form (Year 9), alongside flexi boarding for two consecutive nights, extended day places and occasional nights. International boarders who cannot travel home for short breaks can stay in school by arrangement.
Boys from Third Form to Fifth Form belong to Chalmers East or Chalmers West, where boarders sleep in dormitories and double rooms. Sixth formers move to Laidlaw North or Laidlaw South, with single en-suite study bedrooms. Each house is run by House Parents with deputy and assistant house staff and tutors.
After lessons, boarders return to their houses for evening prep, a supervised study period, followed by informal sport, house activities or quiet time. Younger boys follow a set bedtime routine, while older students manage their time with guidance. Weekends combine sport, trips, social events and the Saturday Electives programme with rest, and Golf and Tennis Academies offer specialist coaching.
The Support for Learning team helps pupils with needs such as dyslexia through timetabled and small-group sessions in literacy, study skills and exam technique, based in the Harvey Hub, and agrees an individual learning profile with each student. In-school psychotherapy is available through a partnership with a specialist practice, a chaplaincy team offers further support, and sixth formers receive guidance on UCAS and American university applications.
