Moor Park Overview

Moor Park is an independent, co-educational Catholic prep school for children aged 3 months to 13 years at Richards Castle, just outside the market town of Ludlow in Shropshire. Founded in 1964 as a boys' boarding prep school, it now educates boys and girls in a nursery, pre-prep and prep school on a single site of around 85 acres of parkland and woodland beside the Mortimer Forest.

Children follow the English National Curriculum, with outdoor learning built into the weekly timetable, and older pupils are prepared for entry to a wide range of independent senior schools at 13, including Common Entrance in Year 8.

Boarding at Moor Park

Boarding is available from Year 3 to Year 8, and families can choose full boarding or flexi boarding on any number of nights a week. The boarding community is small, with places for around 50 children, most of whom board flexibly alongside a smaller group of full boarders from the UK and overseas, and flexi boarders can join the full boarders at weekends.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys and girls board in separate wings, each with its own house parent, under the oversight of a Head of Boarding. Boarders sleep in dormitories in the upper floors and gather in a shared kitchen area for an evening snack before bed. Full boarders can phone home every evening.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings bring activities such as sports hall games, hockey training, bushcraft and cinema nights. At weekends boarders use the indoor heated pool and grounds, enjoy Saturday evening events such as karaoke and movie nights, and go out on Sundays to places such as Mortimer Forest and the Stiperstones, or for climbing and ice skating. Boarders who wish can attend Sunday Mass in Ludlow.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship. The Good Schools Guide records provision for pupils with specific learning difficulties, autism, and social, emotional and mental health needs, among others. Overseas pupils are assessed in English on arrival and receive EAL lessons and individual tutor support, and overseas parents meet teachers by video call in place of parents' evenings.

International boarders at Moor Park are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Moor Park

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Moor Park website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Moor Park offers full boarding to international pupils in Years 3 to 8, from age 7 until they move on to senior school at 13. Overseas pupils usually join for a whole academic year or longer, and the school prefers to take small groups from any one country so that children can support each other in the early stages. Most international students join in September, and entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Children are expected to have a reasonable level of English before joining, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Overseas pupils are assessed on arrival and receive up to three timetabled EAL lessons a week, together with individual tutor support. Cambridge English exams can be arranged as an optional extra.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Moor Park is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Moor Park requires every pupil whose parents live outside the UK or EU to have a guardian who is over 25, lives in the UK and is within two hours' travel of the school by car or public transport. The guardian is the school's emergency contact and provides a home during holidays and fixed weekends, when boarders leave school. Moor Park is a member of AEGIS and strongly recommends an AEGIS accredited guardianship organisation.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Moor Park boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Moor Park's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Moor Park, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Moor Park is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Moor Park may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
