Moreton Hall Overview

Moreton Hall is an independent day and boarding school at Weston Rhyn, about four miles north of Oswestry in Shropshire. It educates children from 6 months to 18 years on a 100-acre parkland site: the nursery and Prep School, for ages 4 to 11, are co-educational, while the Senior School and Sixth Form are for girls only. The school was founded in 1913 by Ellen Lloyd-Williams and moved to Moreton Hall in 1919.

Senior pupils take GCSEs, with a one-year accelerated IGCSE route for some international students, followed by A Levels, which can be preceded by a Foundation year. The Extended Project Qualification and a performing arts diploma are also offered, and Lower Sixth girls run Moreton Enterprises, a set of pupil-led businesses.

Boarding at Moreton Hall

More than 80 per cent of senior pupils board, either full time or flexibly, and weekly boarding is also available. Over 85 per cent of full boarders remain in school at weekends. Boarding starts in Year 3, when both boys and girls can board, and the school has welcomed international families for more than 70 years.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls in Years 7 to 10 live in two junior houses, Pilkington and Stables, which also house the prep girl and prep boy boarders. Year 11 moves into Rylands, and Sixth Formers join Charlesworth or Lloyd-Williams. Younger girls share rooms of two or three, while Sixth Form houses offer single study bedrooms and twin en-suite rooms. Resident house parents and tutors run each house.

Boarding Life

Evening prep follows activities and supper. There are no Saturday lessons; an optional morning enrichment programme runs alongside sports fixtures in lacrosse, hockey, netball and fencing, with house activities in the afternoon. Sundays begin with brunch, followed by trips to outdoor centres, theme parks, cities and cultural sites.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning support for pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia and other needs is taught one to one or in small groups during prep time, with no extra charge for support or exam access arrangements. Every senior pupil meets a personal tutor weekly, and the Health Centre has a registered nurse on duty around the clock in term time, with a counsellor visiting weekly.

International boarders at Moreton Hall are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Moreton Hall accepts international boarders from Year 3 in the Prep School, where boys and girls board, and from Year 7 to the Sixth Form in the girls' Senior School. Admission is non-selective, and international routes include a one-year accelerated IGCSE course and a Foundation year before A Levels. Pupils come from countries including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, France and Chile. Most international students join in September, and entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Specialist EAL teachers work with pupils whose first language is not English, in very small groups or individually, and the programme builds towards the IELTS examination in the Upper Sixth. Pupils can also prepare for Cambridge English qualifications from A2 Key to C2 Proficiency and for an English Speaking Board certificate.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Moreton Hall is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Moreton Hall may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
