Mowden Hall School Overview

Mowden Hall School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school in the parish of Bywell near Stocksfield, Northumberland, about 11 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne. It educates around 200 pupils aged 2 to 13. Founded in 1935 near Darlington, the school moved in 1945 to Newton Hall, a country house built in 1835, set in around 52 acres. It has been co-educational since 1982 and part of the Prep Schools Trust since 2007, and is now part of Radley Schools Group, which brings together Radley College and seven prep schools.

Classes average around 12 pupils, and children are prepared for senior school entry at 13. Sedbergh and Oundle are among the most popular destinations, alongside Barnard Castle, Durham and Ampleforth.

Boarding at Mowden Hall School

Boarding is open to pupils from age 8 in the prep school, and families can choose full, weekly, flexible or occasional boarding, from a regular night each week to boarding through the weekend. A small number of international pupils join each year group from around the world, for stays ranging from four weeks to a term or longer.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders sleep in dormitories in Newton Hall, the main school building, usually shared with pupils from the same year group and occasionally with a neighbouring year. The upstairs boarding area has a relaxed, homely feel, with space for craft and games. Boarding staff look after laundry and daily routines, matrons help younger children with hygiene, and the School Nurse manages medical care, medication and dietary records.

Boarding Life

Evenings combine a varied activity programme with quiet time, and boarders can phone home on school telephones once prep is finished. Bedtime begins with 15 minutes of quiet reading. Full boarders stay at school at weekends, which mix downtime with organised activities, and Sundays are usually spent on outings in the local area. Six Big Boarding Weekends, from Friday to Sunday, bring larger groups of boarders together during the year.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning support is available for pupils with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, and for pupils on the autism spectrum. Teaching groups are small, with a pupil to teacher ratio of around 8:1.
